What the ^$@&%* is in Purina Beneful ??

We normally buy Eukanuba, but at $50 a bag, we figured that the dog was eating better then us. Looking at the dogfood aisle, Beneful was $28. Mrs Scout was doubtful, but I told her "Hey, it's not freaking sawdust and straw, it's from Purina. See it says 13 vitamins, All natural, lots of Protein, etc..." so she's convinced.

Get home and pour it from the bag into the bucket we use to store the dog food. (That sits on top of his crate.) Take a scoop and dump it in his bowl. He tears into it like a junkie getting his fix. Then he sits next to his crate howling at the bucket with Beneful in it. Finally we had to take the bucket and put it in the garage. Since my wife normally feeds him, when ever she's home he stands by his food and water bowls and howls. When she's not home, he stays by the garage door, because he knows that's where the food bucket is and the door she walks through when she come she comes home from work. I'm mean this is freaking ridiculous. I've never seen our dog act like this. If you saw this behavior in a human, their butt would be in rehab.

What the hell is in it that makes a dog act like a meth-addict ??

I have a 2 friends who are engineers at Purina. I'll ask them if they put heroin in it.

You should try to get a job in one of their commercials.

My wife makes it every day. The dog loves it too. It's actually really easy the only downside is shipping costs.

Don't feed them that crap. Three of the first four ingredients are fillers. Quality dog food isn't cheap, but you also don't have to feed them as much or clean up as much in the backyard.

Yep, I am in the same place, we had our large dog die and now have another large breed puppy. I feel like we detracted from our last dogs quality of life and maybe length of life by feeding it standard dog food, all of which starts with corn. Dogs are not designed to eat corn. Feeding it a puppy food that starts with lamb as the first ingredient. The next step? I have a food sealer and lots of deer. As soon as I get a deep freezer I'm going to get a crapload of rice, beans, and aforementioned deer. The dog may turn out to be a Puerto Rican redneck german sheperd, but at least he'll eat well. Got to read on recipes some, I'll probably get a vitamin supplment in there too.

We get our dry dog food from the vet. We also get some canned food from the vet to mix in, but we're supposed to use very little. There's the white label canned food and then there's the stuff that actually smells really good and is more expensive than a meal at a good restaurant.

When he gets the really good stuff, his bowl is licked so clean it shines.

Corn is bad news for some dogs.

My two critters ended up having really bad reactions to corn and corn meal in their kibble, so I have to actually shop around to find kibble minus the corn filler.

The local WalMart stopped selling Lamaderm, but I found a suitable replacement at Gander Mountain, of all places.

The Kirkland store-brand at Costco is quality chow made by Diamond. The regular stuff's first ingredient is chicken & the lamb's is...lamb.

Neither has wheat or corn. The carbo is rice.

Yeah, I like the Kirkland food. My dog gets that mixed with a small amount of chicken, steak, and other left over meats in a broth. Except in November when my normally stingy dad buys and cooks an entire frozen turkey for the dog (because it's cheaper than dog food he says) so she can have Thanksgiving too.

That gets put in containers and is the "meat mix" part of her food for about a month.

You also got to be careful about the ground up dog collar that they forgot to remove before they ground up Bowser and the other euthanized animal carcasses the cheap food guys get from the animal experiment folks. That's where the animal fat and animal digest comes from in the ingredients, eh?

One of our pets is allergic to both corn and wheat products.

We were buying neutro (sp?) brand food from petsmart, but it's up to $50/40lb bag.

I've sense found dog food at Tractor Supply. Diamond brand, no corn, no wheat and $28/50lbs.

I feed both my Dogs Iam's lamb and rice. They both seem to handle it well.

I used to feed Pro Pac and Diamond dog foods but both can be hard to find where I live. Did Purina Pro Plan but that got uber expensive.

I also used to feed Maximum Nutrition that Walmart carried but the Walmart here quit carrying it a years ago.

I can understand him going nuts when I give him a steak bone or the trimmings from butchering a deer. But this is just dog food.

No, but whole rice and beans used as filler with quality meat makes a nutritious meal that they digest well, unlike corn crap.

Sage did this with Beneful. Couldn't get enough of it.

Now she won't touch it, just like every other brand of dog food we have tried. I have to switch food probably once a month to keep her interested.

We use Beneful Healthy Weight for two of our dogs and Original for another with no effects other than they like it and they are in good health. Used to use Pro Plan but that got expensive once I got caught up in a corporate down-size.

We're fostering a 9 mo.old Pitt Bull pup and we're feeding him Purina One puppy food for large breeds. He put on 15 lbs. of needed weight in weeks. We call him Bubba, but he's actually 75 lbs. of unbridled youthful exhuberance.
