A Garand in .458 Win Mag?!?!
« on: November 02, 2009, 07:11:48 PM »
Survey sez "Yes." At first I thought it was just more ridiculous tomfoolery (which I have nothing against, btw), but as I think about it this is actually a really good idea. In calibers capable of taking the largest African game, one is limited to either bolts or doubles (generally speaking). This gives the quick second shot follow up of a double, with a bit more mag capacity. Plus you can mount an Eotech on it and not have Harris Holland's ghost haunt you.  And at $3500 +shipping + rifle it's way less spendy than a double. More than a bolt, but if you're going on safari in Africa I'm not sure skimping on the gun is a smart move.

Would a semi-auto hunting rifle be legal in most of Africa, regardless of caliber?

I don't think that helps the Garand.

Nah. I'm holding out for a .460 Weatherby on an AR platform.

Didn't mean to be contrary.  I agree it'd be just the ticket for Africa (or up here), especially as a guide's back up.

Or if they started cloning dinosaurs or Pleistocene critters.

Most places, no. It would be refused at customs. Or you'd not be able to get the import paperwork for it at their U.S. Consulate over here.

Only white people have to follow them.

That seems to be the U.S. system as well these days.  :|

As would I.

It will be a LONG time till I have $3500 for such a thing, though.

There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

$4000 will get you a double gun, I'd probably buy a double in an African caliber instead of a semi auto.

You could convert a Mauser 98 for a lot cheaper. IIRC, the .458 was pretty much made for that purpose.

Actually, McCann's been making those .458 Garand conversions for many years, well before Balog "discovered" them.  If there were catastrophic failures of his conversions, I'm sure it would resound and reverberate like some sort of Internet artillery barrage upon the first instance.  So far, nothing of the sort...

Garand actions are incredibly strong, the gas system is its achille's heel, but there are ways of fixing that too.

What company makes double guns in African calibers for $4k?

Never said I discovered anything, just pointing them out to the folks who might not be aware of them.

There is a gunsmith in Lamoni, IA that will build one for $4k. Uses an Italian or German SXS shotgun as the donor gun and builds it from from there. Express sights and all.

A friend of mine is getting one built in .405 Winchester. I've thought about one in .416 Rigby but I have other things to aquire first before then.

I've thought about either one of the late-run Winchester Model 95 leverguns in .405 Winchester, or another Ruger #1 in the same chambering.  I'd probably go for the former, because I already have a Ruger #1S in .45-70, and it does pretty much everything a .405 will do, albeit with more pain on the shooter's end when I run those 500gr thumper loads throught it.

Okay Necromancing Dance

Many countries in Africa, if not all will not let you bring in a semi automatic rifle or shotgun. Even for hunting reasons.

Mr. McCann is no longer with us, he died a few years ago. A true craftsman. At that time , McCann industries stopped building rifles. I do not know if they have resumed.  His  Garand conversions were really well made, not just a caliber conversion but a shortened stock, lighter etc.
