Interesting list. Mostly in fly over country, with TX coming out a clear winner.

Lies. I knew my area would be in there (#30). There are still at times 300 people applying for one job.

I couldn't help but notice that the list seems to be dominated by Red State cities, at least for the to 30 or so entries.

I notice the Houston area was at #10 and said unemployment peaked at 8% which is still a lot.

The area I work would likely be okay if Dow Chemical's K-Dow deal hadn't crashed and burned last year and led to layoffs.  My company had a few layoffs early last year and barely broke even a couple months, but has a shot at meeting targets for the year now.  Things are improving at least locally, though I fear what will happen if the Dems pass their pet projects.

Not such a bad thing (except for last weekend when they didn't even bother to show up, letting the Aggies walk off with a win. *grump* ).

I'm surprised to see Tulsa so high on the list.
To hear the news out of City Hall it is all doom and gloom about precipitous declines in sales tax revenue and budget shortfalls. They laid of 21 police officers due to budget cuts (but rehired 18 with "stimulas money" Obama Bucks).
Maybe the City is holding on inspite of the morons in the Mayors office and on the city council.
Murder rates are up with something new seemingly every day, most of it gang related, not that youd hear it that way from the local paper or the police spokes person. Kind of have to figure it out based on location, time of day and nature of the killing.
I'm 45 miles away and you couldn't pay me enough to live in Tulsa.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Now if you could just do something about the heat and humidity...

This is WEST Texas.  Heat, yes.  Humidity, no.

So what does it cost to even think about having a decent deer hunt or bird hunt?

I like rain. I hate dust. I enjoy buying elk, deer, and bear tags over the counter and having public land to hunt them on.

Depends.  One time, or yearly lease?  Either is expensive. Just one is expensive-er than the other.

I hunt about 40 days a year and I don't pay a dime to hunt. Only time I pay to hunt is to shoot pheasants at game preserves outside the wild bird seasons.

Annual lease, then.

Depends on where and when. Can run from $5 per acre per year to well north of $50.  Around my old stoming grounds you can figure about $15 for decent deer country.  Some places will charge you the acreage lease and turn you loose to do what you want.  Others will charge you a per-gun premium if you go over an agreed-to number of hunters.

All that presumes you can find a place that isn't already leased.  The hunters that lease our family place have been with us for more than 20 years.
