What glue to use? (Advice needed)
« on: December 17, 2009, 10:28:41 PM »
My wife loves antiquey things and "bric-a-brac." Her latest treasure is a rather lovely little crystal dinner bell -- the only problem being that the crystal stem is snapped in two. I figure I have ONE chance to glue it back together, and if I choose the wrong adhesive I'll likely contaminate the surfaces so that no other adhesive will ever have a chance.

With that as background -- what's THE best glue/adhesive for glass? Krazy Glue? Super Glue? ___?

Tell her it's busted. She can throw stuff in the microwave as well as anyone else.

Thanks, Professor, but ...

The glue itself isn't overly expensive, but they say trying to cure it with natural sunlight (which is scarce here for the next five months anyway) is not recommended. Their cheapest kit with a U.V. source is $70.

Not gonna happen.

Any other nominees for best adhesive for glass-to-glass repairs?

Do you have a friendly dentist  with a UV lightpipe?

Blue xmas lights bleed into the UV spectrum

You can get a black light bulb at just about any hardware store.  I have one in a trouble light that I used to find pet accidents on the carpet.

I can recommend that you NOT use gorilla glue.

Hawk, NAPA and Advance Auto both sell low cost (about $20) UV lights for AC leak detection.  I've used mine to kick UV glue before and it works well.  The linked glass glue is really the best bet.

But do those UV lights emit the right wavelength to cure that glue?
If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

My wife often says to me, "You are evil and must be destroyed." She may be right.

Liberals believe one should never let reason, logic and facts get in the way of a good emotional argument.
