Splash screen wierdness with Win 7
« on: April 01, 2010, 11:40:36 PM »
When Windows is starting, I get the blue wallpaper that says Welcome.  For an instant, it goes to black, then the wallpaper is back.  Then my desktop appears.  Not really a problem, but...

I just moved my copy of 7 to a different machine a few weeks ago.  I can't remember when it started, or if it's been doing that from the beginning, or if my previous installations did that.

I'm using a Dell LCD that I found on Craig's list.  The "video card" is built-in to the motherboard.

 ???

I think I may have a video card around here that I could throw in there, just to see if that makes it go away.

I think it is just your LCD. I have one around here that does that every time the video changes.

I would have to sit down in front of my two Win 7 systems to tell you if they do it. I normally hit the start button and go do something else before I sit down in front of them. I guess it is just habit from the old slow start ups.

Huh.  I just rebooted to XP, and it's doing something similar, but more pronounced.  Never noticed it before.

Oh well.  This monitor is still a good deal, for 40 bucks plus the two-hour drive to pick it up.

Still might try the video card swap, though.

I've seen this happen, typically with computers that share video memory with system RAM... though it can happen with other video drivers, too.

My dual-Radeon 3870 Crossfire-X system does it when it loads the Catalyst drivers that enable the dual GPU rendering.  Each of those have 512MB of dedicated RAM, though.  If I disable the Crossfire-X features, then it doesn't do it.

I suspect it's an order of operations issue as Windows loads drivers, and a luck of the draw thing.  I have no idea how to re-arrange the driver load order, though.  I don't think it's done through msconfig, like windows services.  Prolly somewhere deep dark in the registry, near the grues.

Not really a problem,...

And there you have it.
If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.
