I have qualms about killing anyone for any reason.  Not to say I'm incapable (not going into detail), but it has never sat well with me.  Instead, I usually keep a solid six hours of gasoline in my car, and friends in just about every direction for that distance--if for some reason I can't get to a police station, I drive.  And drive.

My current vehicle doesn't hold six hours worth of gasoline.  OTOH, regardless of what vehicle I'm in, I've never had a problem finding either a place mine can go that theirs can't, or a road that they can't handle at a speed that I can.

Once they're out of sight or in the ditch, I go on my merry way.

I cannot fathom, however, how young thugs actually think they're being "tough" by ganging up on one old man.
You are applying your own morals to those with no morals at all. In fact, you are applying human morals to entities who aren't human other than in the loosest, biological sense. It makes more sense when you stop doing this.

What's really sad is how many people simply run by it.
"so I ended up getting the above because I didn't want to make a whole production of sticking something between my knees and cranking. To me, the cranking on mine is pretty effortless, at least on the coarse setting. Maybe if someone has arthritis or something, it would be more difficult for them." - Ben

They should be put down as you would any vicious animal.
QFT.

It wouldn't take very many times doing this before the others learned not to act like that.  They do it because they know they can get away with it or with just a minor sentence.
