Damn spiders
« on: June 22, 2010, 04:27:02 PM »
Damn bugs.  Not much I can do now but self-treat.  Found a spider bite on my back Sunday morning.  By the evening I had full body pain like someone worked me over with a baseball bat, diarrhea, stomach cramps, chest pain, all the symptoms.
A little research shows doc won't do anything unless they can identify the offending critter.  That does make sense, as the antivenins are critter-specific.
Aspirin won't touch the pain, but acetaminophen does a good job.  Imodium-AD won't touch the diarrhea.  Lots of time spent on the porcelain throne.  Fortunately, there was no necrosis at the site of the bite.  Unusual, but not unheard of.
Damn bugs.

Seems a little one isn't what you should be worried about at the moment, RM...  ;)

Take a tablespoon of honeycomb three times a day - or more - won't hurt. I always like to fight bugs with bugs.

Woke up this morning feeling much better.  The body pain is finally gone, the stomach cramps and chest pain has subsided, and I can walk a straight line.  The diarrhea is still an unknown because the Imodium-AD finally kinda sorta kicked in.

Caveat:  Applesauce without added sugar/hfcs is best.

I know your pain brother. I was bitten by a black widow once, which you're apparently supposed to go to the doctor for. I didn't, and went through the same symptoms as you for a couple of days. Not fun.

A second time I was bit by an unknown spider that was in a pair of rubber boots that I had stored in a shed and hadn't worn for a while. I stupidly stuck my foot in without shaking the boot out first. I felt a pretty painful sting on the top/side of my foot and when I pulled it out there was something brown, squished, and vaguely spider shaped. My foot swelled up like crazy and turned all kinds of blacks, browns, reds, and greens. Went to the doctor on that one and he put me on antibiotics and some kind of special cream to "keep my skin from falling off" or something like that. I remember my foot looked pretty gangrenous for nearly a month.

That sounds like a brown recluse like we have down here.  I've heard the venom destroys the tissue and can take a while to heal up.

We found this little guy in camp during a southern Illinois backpack trip, juvenile male Black Widow.

I always shake out my boots and clothes before putting them on when backpacking now  :O

For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity, that they may be without excuse. Because knowing God, they didn’t glorify him as God, and didn’t give thanks, but became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.

This happened on my folks' farm, which is apparently in a recluse area. The doctor thought that was what it might be, but there was not enough left of the spider after the "revenge of my foot" to tell what it was. :)

I'm just disappointed that after two serious spider bites I didn't pick up any Spidy-powers.

Those were normal spiders, you need to find the radioactive ones.

Damn, beat me to it.

You can find those at night. just look for glowing spiders. You'll probably find them arounf uranium deposits. Just find a trail of glowing ants, follow them to the uranium and look around for the glowy spiders. Piece of cake.  ;)

I just thought I would tell you that I hate you so much right now.

The national zoo has a couple of those. No glass seperating the people from them as the spiders can't really move except on their web.

My wife wasn't sure they were real until I blew on the web and they moved. (The zoo workers nearby were not too pleased by that, btw.)
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought
