Kayak fishing?
« on: August 06, 2010, 04:04:33 PM »
Anybody do it? I'm looking for suggestions for a proper but inexpensive boat. Good stability would be nice. Thanks!  =D

Do you cook 'em breaded and fried or baked or grilled?
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Get a big power boat and and scrape them off the bow  ;)

Bunch of comedians....

There are some forums around the webz dedicated solely to fishing by kayak.  Check out the Hobie design that lets you pedal to paddle so you can drive and fish at the same time.

goose meets fishing kayaker

Offer the goose the equivalent of an oversized wedding ring and then don't expect it to try to consumate the marriage?

I was amazed to witness the stability of the kayak - always thought they would be more prone to rolling over.

I sat myself in one for the first time yesterday and felt pretty prone to rollover most of the time. It was a cheapie and it may be a little too small for me. I'm top heavy too. I just measured. When I flex my lats out I can get to a 53" chest.  Yea, I was wobbly.

When I finally started getting the hang of it I found I could control my balance by keeipng straight and just moving my head side to side. I'm not sure what that says. Probably has something to do with brain density vs counterweight effect.

Thanks for the good info. I may just look into rental to start with. Got a good lead on a local outfitter besides EMS and Cabelas.

Guess maybe I shouldn't have been messing with the geese yesterday? Lesson learned!

I caught me a gull off a pier one time. Swooped down and took the bait/hook right out of the air in mid cast. That was an interesting fight. Got it all the way in before it managed to get itself free. Hook was buried in the bait so it was just tangled. Kind of like reeling in a kite on a windy day.  =D

canoes tend to be more wobbly as you butt is way above the waterline

I'm figuring small lakes here in CT for bass mostly. I want to fish in the tight spots near shore.

Craigs list is not a bad idea at all.

Another option, have you looked at the pontoons?

Yea, the inflatable part just sounds like a potential for hassle. I was reading up on one and there were complaints about it losing air over time. Plus I can see dry rot being a problem a few years down the line?

I had one and had neither of the problems.
De-inflate when not in use.
Dry before storing.
Mine was awesome, I could carry it in the trunk of the car I had and assemble on site.  Some of the larger ones are compatible with electric trolling motors, too.

Depending on your situation anyways, they can be a good option.  One downside is that your feet get wet, and in the cooler parts of the year you might end up wearing waders to compensate.
But I really liked the portability of the pontoon I had.  Very stable platform, too.  Being able to wear fins and paddle with one's feet was a plus while trying to stay in position on fish.

Which is a big selling point on the hobies kayaks. However, they cost more. Oh, I've seen some recently with built in trolling motors, too.
You might get some ideas at the boards here. I've never used those boards, so buyer beware...

The hobies are pretty 'spensive, though.

There's always craigslist for a fishing kayak.

http://newlondon.craigslist.org/boa/1884292208.html

Barring that, alot of the sporting goods stores have entry level kayaks quite often under $400.  Dicks, Big 5, even Costco and Sams clubs.  Can't speak to the durability of the entry level stuff, but I don't know why for light pond use they wouldn't be a good deal.

I'm a middle of the roader, I don't want 'spensive but I dont want cheap either. My though is to look into rentals and get a feel for the various makes and models. That's what the forums all suggest. I do like the pontoon idea. Wallyworld has one for like $400 but that's the one they were complaining sbout bad valves and losing air.

If you go for a pontoon, get one from creek company. I had their base model for several years and it was a champ!
