I came across the oddest AP story in the paper today. George Clooney met with President Obama on Tuesday to discuss ways of averting a civil war in Sudan. Apparently this isn't the first time they've had meetings.

All I can say is, "what the...?"

The rest of the story is here.

Nixon met with Elvis to help win the drug war.

Clooney and a few other Hollywood types are concerned about Sudan, and the concern is warranted. Quite a few atrocities happening in that area, last I checked.

And what wise counsel would Clooney give?

It's as absurd as Sally Field testifying before congress about farm subsidies, her expertise coming from the role she played in a movie.

Well, he probably has more foreign policy experience than El Presidente.  :P

I guess clinton isn't doing her job well enough or obama wouldn't have had to tap clooney.

That actually makes some kind of sense ;/

Yes it does. Elvis knew more about drugs than Clooney knows about Sudanese civil wars or Sally Field about farm subsidies.

But they all look good on the old boob-tube, and that is what counts.  ;/

Clooney is a citizen.

We trust citizens to elect the people who decide foreign policy, thus by definition we trust them to understand it.

More to the point, he traveled extensively in the area and has done a variety of work raising money to help the people there.

I've travelled extensively in Utah (as well as other western states). I've done a ton of fund-raising, especially for candidates for public office.

Does that mean I'm qualified to be governor of Utah, or give the US president counsel on political affairs relating to Utah?

Had you been on the board of a major Utah PAC, it's likely people would expect you to be knowledgeable on the issues surrounding Utah politics, yes?

Not necessarily. They would want me to be able to raise money, something I'm sure Mr. Clooney's name enables him to do.

If your knowledge of the subject is greater than his knowledge of the subject, yes, you are qualified to give counsel. It should be a matter of grave concern that Obama has less knowledge of world affairs than Clooney, who does this stuff as a hobby, more or less.

As for elected office, if you meet the constitutional requirements for the state, yes. Your knowledge of that state is completely unimportant.
