Keep in mind, the S&W M10 that was $150 5 years ago is now $250+.  $300 M19s are now $450+. 

I do hear the Model 19s are up significantly

I agree that a "buy and hold" position can be a good investment.  I'd add ammo to the package though. If you pick up guns and ammo at a good price, it's a good bet that over the next 10-20 years they will not lose value, and could gain as much as 25-50%.  These days, that's not a bad investment. As usual, the rich get richer -If you could afford something like a Purdy and Sons shotgun, you could likely sell it for a profit the minute they finish building it.
When I first got into military style guns (back in the Clinton days), you could pick up an unlimited number of good quality SKS's for $80, and several types of Swedes, for just over $100.  If I had put the same amount of $ into guns and ammo back then, rather than feeding my 401K, I'd be a lot less nervous about getting laid off these days.
