Do you guys like Benchmade knives?
« on: January 01, 2011, 07:10:08 PM »
I am saving my pennies for a Dejavoo. Will be my first of the Butterfly Brand. Very excited.

Also, is it just me, or does it seem like Gerber makes a lot of garbage these days?  =|

I have three: an early thumbhole AFCK, a Nimravus fixed blade, and a Griptilian. I'm happy with them. I'm sold on the Axis lock, but the Deja Voo looks nice. The handle ergonomics seem strange to me.

Yes.  Next question.  :D

I have an Ares sitting in my pocket that I've carried for years.  I have a Griptilian I use as my field knife and a couple other older models (AFCK, Stryker) sitting around somewhere.

I also am not impressed with a lot of Gerber's new offerings.  I think they are getting away for their core competency, which is multitools.

I have one I picked up (used?) at a gunshow, no idea what model but it does say "154CM' . I love it! Like the looks, like the size and it takes & holds an edge! Replaced a larger (than the B-M) Gerber folder that I lost trying to stay legal:) Much better knife than the Gerber, which I picked up for $10 at a pawn shop. Got $40 in the Benchmade! Easily 4x the knife!!

Stay safe.

Unfortunatly, they do. Only a couple of Gerber blades are made in the US, most of their production is in China. And I don't care what anyone says, they can try and hold to QC all they want, but it just doesn't work. Benchmade tried a line made overseas (don't recall whether they were made in Taiwan or the PRC, they called it the Red class) and it didn't work, cuz they dropped it. Kershaw is doing the same thing, making some of their knives in China and it simply isn't working out.

And I LOVE Benchmade. Excellent products and excellent CS. I have one of their original CSKs in D2 steel as my fixed blade fighting/utility knife and I have a rescue hook. My sister has a mini Griptillian and it's nice and smooth, but I use a Kershaw as my EDC knife.

Really? I haven't handled one, but the handle seems very ordinary to me. As a fan of drop points, I've always liked that Bob Lum blade shape.

I think they're great knives..but I usually end up carrying something lighter, like an Al Mar or Spyderco.

That would probably be the the steel it's made from

Seems long and angled strangely in proportion to the blade, with less curvature than I'd expect. Not sure why, perhaps just a trick of perspective in the photos I looked at.

A '96 Emerson/Benchmade (from when they were still together) Super CQC-7 is my daily (anti)social knife. Probably not WI-legal, but (shrug) I tend not to get frisked by the police much.

A few guys at work were comparing knives for some reason, the guy who started it pulls out his Gerber (from Target) an the other guy pulls out a Kershaw all proud of himself, and I pulled that out. They're  ???

So yeah, I'm still "that guy" at work I guess.  Probably didn't help that I had to explain what a chisel grind was, and that yeah, it's not so great for cutting computer boxes and string, or even whittling.

I promise not to duck.

Benchmade knives might be interesting if there were no Spydercos.
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

The Spyderhole is about the only downside to the Dejavoo. Or maybe I'll get used to it.  =|

Why buy it if you are not 100% happy with it? Benchmade makes plenty of other fine blades...I don't care for thumbholes, I much prefer thumbstuds.

I absolutely trust Benchmade knives. I'm planning on picking up a manual Bedlam in the near-future.

No, for me they really don't. Very, very few knives meet my requirements for a pocket knife. I want a non-coated, non-serrated, locking, flat-ground, drop-point blade about 3.75 inches long, made of very good steel, that can be opened and closed safely and easily with one hand. I don't want a cheaply made knife; and at those prices, it shouldn't look cheap, either. Since my pocket knife is not a weapon (knock on wood), it shouldn't be obnoxiously "tactical." I haven't found many of those in the price range I can afford, and the Dejavoo isn't perfect. If you all can track down more of the type of knives I'm talking about, I would love to see them.

The larger size Boker Skellern is another I was considering, but I think I'll like the Dejavoo better.

I have a CRKT Alaska Bwana that has served me well, but it's seen a little too much use at work. And it's AUS6, anyway.

I had a Kershaw Boa until one of the kids...

Sigh... I keep hoping that I'll open a box, and there it'll be... $130 knife, and worth it.

Hey, considering your avatar, Fistful, shouldn't you have a fixed blade on your ankle? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pQdaMKTmUw

For the past several years, I've been carrying fixed-blade Loveless-style knives in my front pocket (when not at work). Because that's only marginally legal and probably not wise, I've decided to start shopping for a folder. My fixed-blade EDC was custom-made, but I can't afford that sort of thing, anymore.

Paper sales are down lately.  ;)

Spyderco recently made flat ground versions of their Endura and Delica:

I, however, have a definite preference for thumbholes over thumbstuds.

I've carried a Griptilian every day for years.

I dig it...

I have this with the combo blade, purchased in '97.  I love it, though I dinged up the straight edge pretty bad awhile ago and I haven't bothered to re-grind it.  Still the best hundred bucks I've ever spent on a knife.

I had a benchmade, and it got gifted to a friend...

Ouch, my headache just came back.

WHEN did "gift" become a verb? I wasn't on the distribution list for the memo.

Then tell him to cut it out, if his grammar isn't as sharp as yours.  This thread will be divided, though, between Benchmade fans and the slice that doesn't like them.  Such a schism might sever any goodwill!
