Are We Back?
« on: January 30, 2011, 12:18:41 PM »
I had to finish my coffee doing work instead of screwing around on here.  =|

What is that all about?

Funny though my sites have been down all morning too so I thought my computer was acting up again so I went through it again. Then I tried to get in on my wife's and no go there either. That's about the moment the clue bat hit me.  ;/

Yea, I don't know what that was about.

I sent an email off about it, didn't hear anything back though.

I'm not sure we're totally back. The pages look like we're in Usenet on two different computers and browsers, including after having dumped caches.

It looked like a Geovario problem -- I wasn't able to get on any of the sites that I know that are served by them.

I figured there was something goofy not related to my machine since both APS and gunrights media were down, but everything else was OK.

Nevertheless, I ran an AV program just to be on the safe side.

It is much more powerful to seek Truth for one's self.  Seeing and hearing that others seem to have found it can be a motivation.  With me, I was drawn because of much error and bad judgment on my part. Confronting one's own errors and bad judgment is a very life altering situation.  Confronting the errors and bad judgment of others is usually hypocrisy.

Geovario says it was a cron job that ran a vendors software

I blame the Egyptians.

I told fistful that moving the server to Cairo was a bad idea...but no...he just chuckled and said, "If it was safe enough for Moses & Baby Jesus, it'll be safe enough for APS...."

I was surprised to find both APS and www.abriefepisode.com (shameless plug) were both hosted on Geovario. Anyhoo, here is their reply:

Hello,

Thank you for your support call via the voicemail you left.

We have now resolved the issue - as you noted this affected several sites hosted by us; each affected site - started showing a default error page.

Additionally we have traced this issue to a daily cronjob from one of our software vendors - and we have opened a ticket with them to determine next steps to prevent this from happening again.

What's a cronjob? If it were spelled chronjob, I guess I'd understand.

Cron is a time-based job scheduler in Unix-like computer operating systems. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cron

I blame the Egyptians.

Fail.

Fistful is to blame, always.
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

Just looking for mummy...  ;)

I think it's pretty funny we all jumped to the same Egyptian connection conclusion. First thing I thought, "I wonder if the server is in Egypt and is now a smoking pile of rubble?"
