That everybody lies about how long it takes to get to work/travel destination and how many MPG their auto makes going to work & elsewhere.

Must've spotted a post somewhere where the numbers looked "enhanced."

I caught a brown trout once that...

I walked to school 3 5  10 fifteen miles every day.  Uphill.  Both ways.  With one shoe.  My brother used the other shoe. We were so poor...

It's 7.3 miles to work. It takes me, on average, 15 minutes in actual driving time. Depending on the vehicle I drive, my mileage will vary. I'm never sure my exact MPG unless I'm taking a long trip. I will then always make the calculations when I fill up the tank. Previous vehicles it was 26 or 27 MPG. Current vehicle, I'm hoping for 20.

What brought this on?

I didn't like walking, so I bought a car my senior year.  Never did figure the mileage out with any accuracy. Before rent and utilities were an issue, affording gas was never a problem.  I got a four-door so I could drive my classmates, but then mostly didn't bother, because I'm just a bitch like that.  Did pile 'em in when there was an ice-storm or similar, so as to undermine their future rights to claiming childhood hardship.   =)

But I did work forty+ hours a week, during the school year--nine hour school-day at my school, while running a big extra-curricular.  I made four bucks an hour at three different jobs to pay for the car.  And I walked to all my various jobs.  Uphill.  Both ways.  Through the snow.  So there.  =D =D =D

Nearly everyone seems to revise drive time down and MPG up.

"Oh, I get 15MPG with my 1-ton Ford with a 460 under the hood and a 4.50 rear end."
Right, downhill with a tailwind.

"It takes me 15 minutes to get to work."
Yeah, if you only count the time from the moment you get on the highway until you get off the highway and discount both the city streets, the time from door to auto, and auto to desk.

"It takes me 5 hours to get from Dallas to Little Rock."
Really?  It takes me 6 hours driving 5-10MPH in excess of the speed limit with only one short stop for fuel & bio break.

The immediate cause of my post was a colleague telling me "The drive on the ice-slick highway takes 20 minutes and moves at around 30-35MPH."  I then did the identical drive, drove mostly 35-40MPH, and it took me 40 minutes.

I'm guessing a lot of those people aren't lying. They're just wrong.

My wife NEVER gets a time estimate correct. She's not lying, she is incapable of estimating time.

Around here it's with how long it take to get to Chicago.  Somehow, it takes close to an hour to get from northern metro Detroit to Ann Arbor, and an hour to get from northwest Indiana Indiana to downtown or inner neighborhoods/suburbs of Chicago unless it's 2 am, and yet there are people who claim to be able to drive from my old 'hood to Skokie (just north of Chicago) in 2-1/2 or three hours.  Not sure how they are covering the nearly 200 miles between Ann Arbor and the Indiana border at Michigan City in 30-60 minutes.   ;/

So true.  On average, it takes me 30-60 minutes longer to get anywhere than anyone else.

It is even worse with trips to the casino- Under estimate time, overstate muleage and winnings

I timed it tonight.  43 minutes to get the 9 miles (almost on the nose) from work to my truck on my recumbent bike.  12.6mph average.  Not too shaby given that it's only my third time doing that and I haven't really exercised at all in probably 15-16 months prior to starting that last Thursday.  Goal is get that time down to a little under 34 minutes which would be a 16mph average.  Once that happens I'll move the truck parking spot 4 miles further out from work.  That way I can keep the duration of the ride over 45 minutes.  If I start to crack 20mph average then I'll go all the way from home (18 miles each way if I stay off the death wish roads).

FTR, according to my truck's computer I'm averaging 14mpg give or take over the last 12k miles.  That'd be 15+mpg if I could get sober gas on a regular basis.  Damn corn farmers.

And door to desk is 30mins +-2 to drive to work.  Unless there's a freight train in which case it's an extra 3-5 minutes.  Or if SWMBO finds a dead battery in her car.  That can add a good 20-30 minutes depending on how far down the road I am when she calls.

I might actually go to a casino if there was a good chance I could win a mule.

People talk about that?

Yep.  Maybe I just travel around the country by auto and get into conversations about it.  But, it is also a frequent topic among co-workers & friends.

I'm so obsessed with gas mileage, I automatically calculate my mileage damn near ever fill up.  I never buy a partial tank, but fill it up  to the brim.  Next time I fill up, I calculate the mileage.

As for time to travel, living in NoVa makes me overestimate the time a trip takes because you never know what's waiting for you on the roads around here.

You'd probably get along great with my brother. He's know me for more than 60 years, and he still acts surprised when the topic arises and I remind him that I DON'T record my mileage and fuel consumption every time I buy gas ...

every time I buy gas ...

You folks buy gas?  When Craigslist has all those cute little fishtank water changer things available?
