I just watched Unstoppable with the new CAPT Kirk and Denzel Washington.   If you can get past the part that all locomotive's have a deadman button (You have to move a control or hit this button every 60 seconds, if you don't the engines go to idle and the brakes applied).

It was entertaining.

Um, you do realize that the movie was based on an actual, factual incident of a runaway CSX train back in 2001, don't you?

The wife and I watched "The Bucket List" with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman Saturday night.  We both liked it.
If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

I've been waiting for several months for Russell Crowe's "The Next Three Days" to come out on DVD. The trailers looked good, and he's become an excellent actor.

Yesterday was the first day for it on DVD and I got a copy from Blockbuster. It's excellent. It doesn't take long before the suspense starts to build, and it's that way almost to the very end.

I'll watch it again tonight, but I'm thinking this might be one of my favorite Russell Crowe movies.

Scout26, at the beginning of the movie, the engineer moving the cars doesn't connect the lines for the air brakes. As I understand it, this renders the dead man's switch inoperable. Anyway, from what I've read, the screenplay addressed the technical issue of the switch.

My understanding of how air brakes work is that they work exactly the opposite to how everyone assumes they work.

No air pressure?  No going anywhere.

Maybe someone who knows something about locomotives should watch the movie. Everything I read indicated that the brake issue had been covered.

FWIW, and because I'm tired of the back and forth.  =)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CSX_8888_incident

Quote
On May 15, 2001, the runaway train departed Stanley Yard in Walbridge, Ohio, CSX's primary classification yard for Toledo,[3] and began a 66-mile (106 km) journey south through northwest Ohio with no one at the controls. The engineer had climbed out of the locomotive of the originally slow-moving train in order to correctly line a track switch. This occurred while he was using the locomotive to move a string of freight cars from one track to another within the train yard, believing his train would not be able to stop short of the misaligned switch. After mistakenly believing he had properly activated the train's dynamic braking system, he set the engine's throttle at 100%. If the dynamic brakes had been properly selected, this would have applied maximum braking. Instead, the locomotive was actually set to full traction power. (In dynamic braking, the locomotive's traction motors are operated as generators and their output is fed to a bank of resistors, dissipating the train's kinetic energy as heat. On the SD40-2, the traction motors' field coils are powered by the main generator, hence a maximum throttle setting results in maximum dynamic brake effect when in that mode.)

As is normal for intra-yard movements, the air brake system for the rest of the train was not connected to the lead locomotive, and thus was not functional. The engineer did set the locomotive's independent brakes (which apply air brakes on only the locomotive), but these were not enough to overcome full engine power. Furthermore, applying the locomotive's brakes disabled the train's alerter system, which, had the locomotive's brakes not been applied, would have applied them in addition to shutting down the engine and stopping the train automatically. The engineer, a 35-year veteran with a clean disciplinary record, attempted to reboard the accelerating locomotive, but was unable to do so and was dragged about 80 feet (24 m), receiving minor cuts and abrasions. There were no other injuries or fatalities resulting from the incident.

This article points out some differences between the actual incident and the film.

The incident happened for reals. I remember it...it just wasn't nearly as dramatic as the movie makes it out to be.

I believe it's something to do with how the brakes were (not) connected to the locomotive...each car had air in the brake resivoir that is on each car. Without being hooked up to the loco, they could not be commanded to apply (by releasing pressure)...they were essentially freewheeling for easy movement through the yard.

I just finished watching "Inception". What a weird experience. I liked it, I think. I'll have to watch a second time to fully understand what was going on before I can finally decide if it was good or not.

Last time I got that spaced out it was due to some stuff called "window pane". ;)

That's funny, I just watched it tonight, as well. I was expecting more of a jolt to a my conception of reality, but - not so much. Maybe I missed something. (But, yes, I did notice the Blade Runner twist at the end, when he's at the house with his kids and Michael Caine.)

I just bought a copy of Tron Legacy.  I actually really liked it.  I was actually pretty shocked at the actual grasp of technology.  Yes yes, the Tron universe is a bit far fetched to be running on a 386.  But a lot of the terms used were fairly accurate, and multiple characters had a very strong grasp of *nix commands.

Recently saw two movies that I very much enjoyed, for completely different reasons.  Secondhand Lions and The Hangover.  Neither is new, but I think both are worth a watch.

Of late, I've been watching my Bond film collection on DVD.  No Academy Award winners, but I just love those movies.

Um, excuse me, but I just told you people that I saw a trailer for a film so moronic, so loathsome in its concept, that even momentary exposure to the footage leaves painful scars on the soul. And I get no sympathy? None at all? You monsters.  :'(

Why should we show you sympathy?  You have no one to blame but yourself for this.  So yes, actually this time it is fistful's fault.

I just rented "Chicago Overcoat". The star is Frank Vincent, the actor who's played wiseguys in the movies "Goodfellas", "Casino", "Gotti", and more others than I can remember. He was Billy Batts in "Goodfellas".

A very bloated Stacy Keach was in the movie, and the extent he's aged was depressing. I didn't even recognize him at first.

When an actor who does supporting roles has the lead in a movie, it's usually not a good sign.

The screenwriter was trying to be Mickey Spillane, but failed miserably. So, there were lines like, "the streets always smell before it rains, but they smell better after", or something lame like that.

On a scale of 10, I'd have to give this a 2, but that's only because I've never seen a 1 before. (Trivia: where did I steal that line from?)
