Charities, charities, and more charities . . .
« on: February 11, 2011, 01:10:37 PM »
For roughly the last two months, I've been getting deluged with solicitations for charities.

It used to be that I'd get something in the mail every once in a while, usually from the larger charites like American Cancer Society, March of Dimes, etc. . . but now I seem to get more mailings from charites in a week than I used to in 6 months. (Phone calls, too . . . usually at an inconvenient time.) Mostly these solicitations come from charities I never heard of. Often there's a "free gift" of something like return address labels included . . . sometimes they even get my city correct.

Have I just been lucky enough to get my name put on some mailing/phone list, or is everyone else getting similarly deluged?

I wonder if the hard times are making for the increased activity?  Are donations to charities down with the economy?  It seems logical that they would be.
If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

My wife often says to me, "You are evil and must be destroyed." She may be right.

Liberals believe one should never let reason, logic and facts get in the way of a good emotional argument.

I made a donation to American Diabetes Association, and my phone/e-mail solicitations have at least tripled. I suspect they (or someone) sold my name in a donor list.

I responded to one thing using my POB return address as Pyotr I. Tchaikovski just to see what would happen.

For a year I was getting stuff from every bulk mail advertiser out there, including ones which had no relation whatsoever to the thing I responded to.

It was amusing to watch the progressive variations in the spellings as time went on and lists were sold from one to the other.

I changed my POB at that point, and that ended that.

I am told that presorted bulk mail, even though it is mailed at discounted postal rates, is the biggest money maker the PO has, except maybe for commemorative stamps.

I repeat my suggestion that you contact the Postal Inspector and complain that the materials sent unsolicited appeals to your purient interests and you do not wish to receive any more of it.

They are pretty much forced to accept your complaint and forward a cease & desist under penalty of 20 years in prison notice to the sender.  Gets your name off lots of mailing lists.

stay safe.
