As a regular backpacker myself, I'd recommend taking the smallest and lightest of the three.

If you are going to carry something around the wilderness you probably aren't going to use you might as well minimize the weight and space penalty.

??? Jeff Cooper was best known for advocating the large-caliber, single-action auto-pistol, and the bolt-action scout rifle. He was a Garand fan, but a lot of gun nuts are. What am I missing?
