Some really neat photos of the volcano erupting.

http://www.theatlantic.com/infocus/2011/05/grimsvotn-volcano-erupts-in-iceland/100071/

Wonder if anyone will calculate how much CO2 and whatnot that eruption caused, and compare it to the total amount of man-made CO2.

That first one over the farm reminds me of that one Far Side cartoon with the two old men in the boat fishing, looking at the mushroom clouds in the distance.

Of course the obvious answer to that problem is that the US must further reduce our evil green house gas emmisions in order to compensate. That and 3 random oil companies must be sued out of existance to further placate mother Earth.

What gets me the most is the lightning involved with it.

This is Mount Rinjani eruption in 1994, in Lombok, Indonesia, off of wiki.  Look at that lighting strike.

Zeus is PISSED!   =D

I guess that much magma friction and metallic movement could attract some atmospheric static discharges.

Part of the cation:
Quote
Crazy-azzed Photographer Jóhann Ingi Jónsson traveled with 4x4 Adventure Tours within 1 kilometer of the eruption.

Fixed it for them.

Ya know, all those overdone Hollyweird cataclysmic events don;t hold a candle (beauty, awe-inspiring, dread-inspiring, and other-wise) to the real deal.

I have in mind this eruption, plus things like the Japanese & Indonesian tidal waves.

I think it's probably all that hot ionized gas providing a conduction path.

There is also a substantial voltage gradient in the atmosphere.  The best quickie reference to it I can find is:

Quote
A typical altitude distribution of potential gradient observed during clear weather at 67° north latitude is integrated to obtain a value of atmospheric potential at a 6‐km altitude of 220 kv relative to the earth's surface.

From:

Citation: Clark, J. (1957), AIRBORNE MEASUREMENT OF ATMOSPHERIC POTENTIAL GRADIENT, J. Geophys. Res., 62(4), 617-628.

http://europa.agu.org/?uri=/jz/JZ062i004p00617.xml&view=article

That's about 12V per foot if my arithmetic is correct.

All that ash creates a lot of static buildup.

What gets me is that you can't even see the volcano because it's under the glacier!
