Barbecue guns --real tradition, myth, or just a good joke?

I've always wondered whether there's a basis in fact for the notion that at barbecues, one wears one's gussied-up-est guns and leather.

I've used the term, and I think I have three guns/rigs  which would qualify as somewhat understated "barbecue guns," but do folks actually do that, still, today?

Or is it just  kind of an old-time saying about "pretty" guns and leather.

As a frequent user of the english language, I was always curious about that, and so-called "Court Guns" and "Church Guns."

Real enough that the term has existed for a long time.

Skeeter Skelton also wrote the seminal article about them apparently, so that'd be several decades ago minimum.  He wasn't known for making stuff up as opposed to simply reporting what was.

BBQ gun = gun for fancy occassion, not a typical backyard BBQ and beer party.

I do believe it is/was a real tradition in the more civilized parts of the country.

I've got two sets of iron & leather for dress-up occassions.  Unfortunately I never have been a law enforcement officer so I have never had the opportunity to show either of them off at court.

Now there are at least three different points of view on bringing alcohol to an event where firearms are present, but as far as bringing my dress-up guns to a "typical" back-yard BBQ party - why not?  Even at the most casual redneck affairs the women seem to gussy themselves up at least a little bit.  Since us guys have no real fashion sense according to the females whose opinions we get most of the time, we can at least bring our pretty guns.

I opened carried to a bbq last yr & was asked to put the guns in the car, I did, I wore them as I drove away.

I don't have dress up guns. I don't have a CCW rotation. I carry the same gun (M&P with TLR-3) all the time, for every occasion, in the same location...it just changes from OWB to IWB and back depending on the circumstance.

me either ( any more ) but I do have a Mernickle belt & holster that looks pretty good.
no retention so I would only wear it at a place I'm sure nobody would try to grab it.

I don't have anything but everyday holsters and guns.

When I go to a neighborhood shindig, I usually indifferently conceal (most of the holster visible but the grip covered) since we are way outside of city limits.

Since Texas still doesn't have open carry, it's too much hassle for non-LE to wear a BBQ handgun.  OTOH, there are no laws prohibiting open carry of rifles other than in certain places, so I guess I could get something like this to carry on a sling:
