Just as the title says.  I'm a huge fan of Johnny Cash.   What other artists should I check out?  Thanks.

Just about every male country singer from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s

I wasn't alive then.  Got any names?  Songs?  Should I just start buying songs from the billboard country charts from that era?

A few more specifics would be appreciated.

Gordon Lightfoot

Yeah, I was gonna mention him (we're you reading my mind?) but he is a little more folksy than hard country.

And Ian Tyson, both from his early folk years with Sylvia Fricker, and his later western/cowboy years ~1980 to present (though he's pretty much lost his voice now :( )

If I could roll back the years.....

Good taste. I'm frequently glad that the soundtrack of my youth consisted of songs like that, rather than Prince, et al.

Yeah. I sometimes went with my mom to barrel races way back when and she would often listen to stuff like that, and with my dad usually listening to classic rock I grew up enjoying a wide style of music which I'm thankful for.

Huh, no mention of Willie Nelson?  Please tell me I missed him when I scanned the posts before mine.

Johnny Cash
Willie Nelson
Waylon Jennings
Merle Haggard
All have some serious Cash flavor.

Hank Williams Sr., of course, deserves place of honor in any country music list.

Also, to satisfy some of the rockabilly that was burnt into Cash, but is strangely absent in previous posts:
Carl Perkins
Tennessee Ernie Ford
Hank Williams, Jr
Bill Haley
Roy Hall

Last, go to pandora.com and set up a Johnny Cash station and pay attention to who is selected to play on that "station."

I just downloaded this off of amazon.  It's ok.   It's sounds like someone is playing a guitar around a campfire though.

My three favorite Cash songs are "God's gonna cut you down", "The Man comes around" and "Folsom Prison Blues".  All three of those songs have far more dynamic range in both the vocals and the instruments than "Tennessee stud".  Cash's songs are just so darn powerful I love it.

Hank Snow, Porter Wagoner, Charlie Walker, Charley Pride (his old stuff).

Also check out Martina McBride's album "Timeless".  It's all old classics, old (maybe original) arrangements, and played on 1960's instruments and equipment.  The first track on the album is Hank Williams "You Win Again", and before the introduction is over she's already hit her first homerun.  The musicians are obviously having fun with it; you can here them occasionally channeling Floyd Cramer, Ernest Tubb, etc.

Huh, no mention of Willie Nelson?

Because he's the anti-Johnny Cash, perhaps? Because he is a hippy? Because his voice gets tiresome after a while?

Willie may be a pot-smoking hippie, but was never the wild man that Cash was.  Cash forgot more about living a life of dissipation than Willie ever knew.

Or the performer.

Or the performer.

Debatable.  They were both pretty good, but too much of either wore on the ears after a while.  Cash had the advantage of being able to pivot to gospel music.

No one's mentioned Marty Robbins?......y'all are just shameful.....
Impressed yet befogged, they grasped at his vivid leading phrases, seeing only their surface meaning, and missing the deeper current of his thought.

Waylon Jennings

Pandora is playing the Waylon Jennings & Willie Nelson combo called "A good hearted Woman" right now.  I like this one.  It's not as hard as Cash but it's still pretty good.

EDIT: "I'm a Ramblin Man" is pretty good too.

I read that the first time as "Pantera is playing Waylan Jennings" and was intrigued...

I recall some metal group back in the 1990s covered Aretha's "Chain of Fools."  Good music will out over genre.
