Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

NoVA and so far rain and a little wind. Just put my little 10 month old to bed. Screaming her head off, did not want to sleep. She was exhausted, and finally stopped fighting after about 5 minutes. That's my hurricane horror story, at least so far. (And hopefully that's the extent of it.)
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

So as you can see from the fire, it was dead calm all day. Eerie actually. Round about 5:30 I saw the leaves start to stir. So I guess it begins. It has been raining pretty good on and off but no wind at all till just a little while ago. FYI for those who might be interested, I live in Hebron CT which is about 15 miles southeast of Hartford. I'm about 50 miles from the coast. On a hill.  It's always windier up here. :P

Looks like I may have to prepare to eat crow soon. Just saw a couple pics from friends in the old 'hood in Va. Beach. Flooding appeared to be unlike anything I ever saw there, excepting perhaps Agnes? and I was only 4-5 then. Reports from the scanner indicate pretty seious flooding as well.

Just how much storm surge do you get on the East Coast storms?  You are automatically not on the worst side of the storm.

Water is coming in as fast as the sump pump can suck it out. I kicked the battery backup in and that sucks more water than the standard one.
Ran a wire from the pump battery out to the garage. If we loose power I'm going to connect it to the car battery and leave the car run in the driveway.

I need to get a generator hooked up here.

Well, my dad has survived Irene. No inheritience for me!!  :'(

Lots of superficial damage in eastern NC, but not much else. Facebook pictures show some flood damage from storm surge pushing up the neuse river system.

Too far away fro the coast for storm surge. The wind will push the water up the sound and the storm is expected to make landfall just at the peak of a full moon high tide that is usually the highest of the year. They are predicting a record storm surge for the coast. IIRC 7-11 feet.

Wind and rain are picking up here. So far so good. Still have power but fully expect to lose it. Right now it looks like it's gently snowing leaves.  [popcorn]

The thing I'm most worried about is all the zombies that will exit NYC once it's inundated. Some of them could make it this far.  :O

Well, that and the two great big trees right next to the house. I'm a little worried about them too.  [barf]

The wind is in our favor on one, but not the other.  =|

plenty of rain here,  our threat is mainly flooding.  the ground is already saturated,  and we have had many towns in the area with flooding in the past years.  right now the river is at 7ft with flood stage at 10.  they are forecasting 15ft by tonight.  we are high enough that it will not effect dirrectly, but main st, and the only grocery store (whose owner has claimed that he will not reopen if he goes through one more flooding) in 30 miles would be under water by three ft.  i am a big skeptic of the sensationalistic journalism that goes along with these storms, but many store fronts on main st are sandbagged.

where are you?

looks like it's already weakening so it won't be stormageddon. Can't believe the power is still on. We usually lose ours at the drop of a hat. Shouldn't be long though. I'll be amazed if we  make it all the way through. With my luck we will,,,and THEN it'll go dead. lol

western catskills.  the winds have now picked up to an amazing 10-15mph!  we did move our trampoline in case a tree falls, but i think it is unlikely to happen.

Turns out the flooding in the old 'hood wasn't as bad as the pictures led me to believe. One of the girls I went to high school with said her house was spared by "inches". Not sure if she meant flooding or a tree, but I suspect the former.

the trees are moderately swaying here, power dimmed a couple times, two neighbors posted pics of trees that have fallen on facebook.  still forecasting 3 ft of water on main st by midnight.

At least New Bern.

Gotcha.  Most of my family is further inland.

I just talked to my paternal grandfather in Goldsboro.  All they got was wind and rain.  Some light damage here and there, but nothing significant.  He came through it unscathed.

actually, it received a much needed facelift!  how did you fare?  missed for the most part?

on other news the river is rising right on schedule with the anticipated flood graph!  still needs about 2 more ft to hit main st.

Report from Williamsburg Virginia:

Lost power yesterday and haven't got it back yet (along with maybe a half a million others)  I was out this morning while trees were still being cleared from the roads.  Flooding was closer to the coast.  A child in Newport News was killed from a direct hit by a tree through the roof of his house.  That was the worst of it.
