Want a phone that will last virtually forever
« on: October 04, 2011, 10:50:56 AM »
http://www.geeksaresexy.net/2011/10/03/8000-phone-runs-no-apps/

It makes and receives calls and texts.  It runs NO applications.  Got $8,000? Then you can buy the base model.  Got money coming out the ying-yang?  Then for the measly sum of $56,000 you can get the steel replaced with solid gold, not gold plating, so scratches will just polish out.

So what’s the secret to its one USP, namely its virtual indestructibility? Simply, it’s the materials. Part of the casing is made of scratch-resistant ceramic. The keys and rear plate are made of the same class of stainless steel used in airplanes and medical use, meaning corrosion and rust shouldn’t be an issue. The display is covered with the same sapphire crystal used in luxury watches.

The construction of the handset also plays a role. Keys are screwed into place rather than glued. The etched symbols on the keys are filled with a clear compound, meaning they can’t get filled with dirt. And the whole thing is put together in a way that means it can be taken apart for maintenance and then reassembled without causing any damage.

Mash the link for more.

I get at least 2 years out of every phone I buy.  At $8k, that will keep me in phones for at least 80 years assuming $200/phone (way above what I've ever paid for a single phone).  Even if I get a single year out of each phone, $8k will keep me in phones till I reach my late 70s.  Pointless, but will probably get snapped up by hipsters as an affectation.

I've got a teenage daughter that could destroy it before she'd get it out the door of the store.

that thing is utterly pointless.

My boss always orders the special super tough phone, whenever she busts the old one. She actually needs a phone that can take a beating. The last oe died when one of her dogs tried to answer the phone.

Her super tough phones last long enough and don't cost nearly that much.

And I bet an Anatolian could eat that sucker just fine.

So, what's the real benefit over buying 400 $20 phones at WalMart and just moving the SIM from one to the next as they die?

Reminds me of the phone Al Pacino lusts after in Oceans 13.

Anybody know what this part means?

I wonder if I could have one made from Cold Steel's San Mai? That should at least quintuple the price.

We've had the same cheap pre-pay phone for about four years now  :P

I sometimes carry it down my boot when I go on horseback rides.  Can't get service here at the house, but up on top of the ridges I can.

Bet it's not waterproof.

That was my first thought too. My last three phones have had to be replaced due to being dropped overboard. Suspect I'd feel a hell of a lot worse about it if an $8k phone fell into the drink.

Why not get a pile of cheap Bluetooth headsets from Dealextreme or some similar vendor, then keep the phone in a Ziploc with a float of some sort?

Well now I have a handy little pelican case and don't see the need to take calls when I'm lucky enough to have an afternoon free on the boat (well, when I lived in a place where that was a semi-regular occurrance anyway).

Yeah, but we have to stay on the expensive side.  I would have gone with Nickel 200 or Titanium.  At least with Nickel, it would have great heat greater strength at high temperatures.

Easy, people with a lot of money really don't want a bunch of cell phone boxes cluttering things up.

What they should have made was a gold (or other exotic/expensive metal) case/holder for their new i-phone.

Just read about titanium aluminide. New replacement for the nickle superalloys used in turbine blade construction. Supposed to be a lot lighter.
