Why they fought.
« on: November 02, 2011, 11:59:11 PM »
From a book by William Hitchcock, here are some of the reasons why Left-wing European college students demonstrated, rioted and fought with the police, back in 1968.

"The French Ministry of Education...tried to relieve the overcrowding [of the universities in Paris] by building a ring of large campuses in the distant suburbs of the city. This cut students off from the dynamic city center, left them dependent upon infrequent train service into Paris, and forced them into ugly concrete-and-steel dormitories."

Forced them! Forced them to live in ugly, suburban housing and ride the train! How could they?!

"[The West German Socialist German Students' Union argued] that the working class had been corrupted by materialism and prosperity and could no longer be counted on to engage in class struggle." (brackets mine (that is, fistful's))

Translation: "The workers" were too busy enjoying good wages to protest that their wages were too low.

The funniest part is that Dr. Hitchcock doesn't seem to notice the irony of his words.
