An evening with Lang Lang
« on: May 15, 2006, 10:51:43 AM »
Saturday, May 13th, I took a young lady to see the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra featuring the one time child piano prodigy Lang Lang.  He was brilliant as promised and has recovered fully from his hand problems.  The depth of emotion given to his music must be seen to be fully understood.  The crowd was enraptured and was quite boisterous during the calls for encores.  http://www.indyorch.org/

If you are able to see him, you will not be disappointed.  http://www.langlang.com/

(His schedule is the second Hanzi character from the left, his bio is the third character from the left [the one that looks like a chicken bone])Smiley
I do not smoke pot, wear Wookie suits, live in my mom's basement, collect unemployment checks or eat Cheetoes, therefore I am not a Ron Paul voter.

I've always liked the way he played Rach's 2nd piano concerto. Funny thing is, the Lang Lang bashing on classical piano boards is comparable to the Kennedy/Feinstein/Hillary Clinton/DU bashing on conservative gun boards. You mentioned "brilliant" and "depth of emotion;" that's what mnost of the bashing centers around. Everyone agrees that he's got wonderful technique, but when it comes to musicality the popular consensus is that he's all show-off and flash, no real emotion.

Needless to say, I stay out of those bashes. Saying that you like something he did (like I like the way he plays Rach's 2nd piano concerto) sets you up for a rather severe verbal beating.

Wow, that's a bit of a rant. Had to get it off my chest here; can't do it on those piano boards.

cosine, as usual, I pay no attention to the popular consensus.Cheesy

The whiners are envious of his talent.  Let them whine.  I do not let their bleating take anything away from my enjoyment.Smiley

Exactly. I'm pretty envious of his talent myself, but it doesn't keep me from from enjoying his playing! Smiley

I remember watching a 60 minutes segment on him and being glued to my seat.  Too bad he has no upcoming West coast concerts.

Wouldn't be surprised he has his detractors given the cutthroat competition in the performing arts. Wink
