TIF vs TIFF, JPG vs JPEG file extensions.
« on: December 30, 2011, 06:49:56 PM »
Is there a difference between TIF and TIFF file extensions?  Or between JPG and JPEG extensions?

I have to upload a document to a company that only accepts TIF, JPG, PNG, GIF, and PDF extensions.  When I save a copy of my scanned document on my PC it gets a 4-letter file extension (haven't tried PDF yet) which the online company won't accept.  It is driving me nuts!

I'll go give them a PDF, hopefully.

Rename the file extensions.  Seriously.  TIFF to TIF and JPEG to JPG  (or lowercase .tif and .jpg)

There are different compression methods (packbits, G3, G4, otherStuffNobodyCaresAbout, etc) but the image viewer will figure that out.

So, they are the same, basically.  That's what I read on Wikipedia, and that is what I thought beforehand.

Doesn't matter now, I got the files uploaded.  This is just one more incident of how my compnay makes the most mundane task troublesome.

Thanks.

Whatever software they're using needs to get with the times.

Meanwhile, manually rename the file.  Change the extension ".tiff" to ".tif", ".jpeg" to ".jpg".

To do it from Winders Explorer, you might have to change folder view options.  I think an option in folder view options to show extensions for known file types.  That should let you change the extension.

Do it from a command prompt, if necessary.

I think the option is actually HIDE file extensions for known file types -- and the default is to have that enabled. One of the first things I do with any new computer (or reinstall of Windoze) is to UNcheck that.

Don't you mean, "Whatever software they're using needs to be open to file extensions other than the gelded 3-char limit used by MS-DOS?"
