Web Hosting Companies
« on: December 31, 2011, 11:08:15 AM »
I need to find a decent one.  This is not for personal use.  I work a a casino, as the Sys Admin and have been tasked with finding a new web host and redesigning the site.

I am not a programmer so it will need it be an easy setup and maintenance deal.
I have marketing, player development, operations and business analysts to assist with design and such.
We already have a site but we went to move it and improve it.

We are going to buy all the iterations of our site and have them all point to our site.  The .com, .net, .biz and .xxx.  They (bosses) are not worried about the .org but I may convince them to get that one too.

Does anyone recommend any company in particular?  We are trying to avoid GoDaddy.com if possible.

Thanks

We've  had good luck and service from go daddy, but we're also small scale.  Now, its mostly used to support our domain-named email, which I'm about ready to ditch when it comes up for renewal and just go to a regular email service.

I'm with Gigenet right now. I've had just about 100% uptime. I'm happy with the performance, fairly happy with the price ($350/mo), and happy with tech support (except for one snotty kid who sometimes works third shift).

I was with Hosting.com, and was very happy with them. They phased out VPS servers in my price range, and I couldn't get my site to function properly on their new cloud servers. I don't know why. I still use them for other sites, and would still recommend them highly.

Back in 2009, I interviewed with a small web hosting company for an operations manager position.  I got the distinct impression that the owner didn't expect the web hosting side of his biz (they did dev work as well) to last more than a couple more years because of competition from the big guys.  He said they could beat them on service, but not on price because of economies of scale.  Needless to say, my desire to work there evaporated right quickly.  What I'd take from that is you might want to pick a firm carefully to make sure they're around for as long as you need them.

I have nothing but great things to say about Dreamhost. I don't think you can go wrong with them.
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

If you need something in the professional scale I would suggest rackspace.
I needed a mod to change my signature because the concept of "family friendly" eludes me.
Just noticed that a mod changed my signature. How long ago was that?

I was with Rackspace, but they provided me with zero tech support. Everytime i had a question or problem, I had to research the answer and hope I understood what I was doing. That's why I switched to Gigenet.

A lot of members of a hosting forum I belong to said that Rackspace was once the best, but had really changed. I found out the hard way. They're still expensive, but no hosting company has ever treated me as badly.

Edited to add that I was with Rackspace in the last year, so take that for what it's worth.

I've had good luck with eApps.  Their "Create a Cloud" VPS solution is pretty cool and lets you drastically adjust the resources available as needed so you're only paying for what you need when you need it.  Price is right and they've been pretty reliable.  Best of all, while you get full access to your server to screw up as badly as you like, their tech support does a good job of fixing stuff without charging for every little contact.
