March 12 (Reuters) - Four Amish youths were charged with underage drinking after they crashed their horse-drawn buggy into a police cruiser in upstate New York, authorities said on Monday.

Police were dispatched to the town of Sherman on Sunday night in response to complaints about Amish youths drinking and drag racing their horse and carriages on the road, said Chautauqua County Sheriff Joseph Gerace.

"These Amish kids in buggies were racing up and down the street," he said.

There's also a video about "buggy fighting" in Kentucky.

How you crash your buggy into an oncoming cruiser without injuring the horse is beyond me.

But it they were exercising their religious freedom.  I mean other than the Amish, who really understands their ways?

Being from Amish country (in Ohio) that is just too damn funny.

There are stories that when a Amish guy would get drunk at the town bar, his friends would put him in his buggy and point the buggy and the horse in the direction of home and then smack the horse.  If the horse was good it would make its way to the home without incident.

Sign of the apocalypse?

Holy *expletive deleted*, that's an almost every day occurrence when you're from Amish country!

Can't even begin to tell you how many drunken Amish kids I encountered on a regular basis.

Amish everywhere here. And yes, drunk Amish kids aren't exactly new. But ramming a cruiser in a buggy is still funny. Wonder if it led to a low speed pursuit.

We had a local Amish drug ring, hilariously associated with motorcycle gangs.

Oh definitely funny.

Years ago when I was on the newspaper a town a couple of counties over had a drunk kid in a wagon pulled by a team of horses sideswipe a half a dozen cars.

Around the same time I was driving one of the back roads when 5 naked Amish teenagers, 3 boys and 2 girls, ran out of the corn on one side of the road and into the corn on the other side of the road.

Laughed about that for the next couple of months.

If they're nekkid, how can you tell they're Amish?

"If they're nekkid, how can you tell they're Amish?"

Educated guess based on:

1. Location, location, location. All of the farms along that particular road for several miles in both directions were Amish owned.

2. Long hair on the girls. Wasn't quite fasionable at the time amongst "English" girls. Shorter hair was.

3. Those ugly bowl-type haircuts most Amish boys have well into their teens.

And yeah, it is rare that you see an Amish or Mennonite girl who could be classified as pretty.

Plain, homely, and moon faced are all adjectives that do normally apply.

Bingo, rt 12 just outside Alexandria Bay NY.
And to answer the question what do the Amish need from NAPA? Wheel bearings of course.

So who has to do the drunk test - the horse or the driver?

I know that the police saw a buggy weaving down the road late one night and they saw that the driver was slumped down on the bench.  The cops pulled ahead of the buggy.  The cops got out and tried to stop the buggy, instead they scared the horse which wound up overturning the buggy and injuring the driver.  IIRC the buggy drive was charged with OVI.  The irony of the whole thing is that the horse was about to turn into the appropriate home and if they would have let it go everything would have been fine.

I didn't realize that there were Amish up in that region.

And you see Amish in the auto parts stores down here, too, most frequently getting sundry items for the generators that power the milking operations.

Oh yeah.  Lots.  Once you get north of Watertown it's all Amish country.  Down in the finger lakes and southern tier as well.
