Are we in North or South Cackalacky?
« on: March 22, 2012, 08:48:57 PM »
Heck, even they don't know....

http://news.yahoo.com/nc-sc-state-line-isnt-where-folks-thought-183850866.html

So in all these years, no one bother to re-survey it and check?

When I bought my house I had to hire a surveyor to come out and redo the plat.

Why not just confirm the existing line and call it good?
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

Because that would be too easy?

Actually, it would literally take an Act of Congress. So no, not so easy.

Edit: Article 4, Section 3 of the Constitution states:

Quote
New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new States shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress.

So, not only act of Congress, but also of both state's legislatures.

And the reason they have to not do this? Something that actually makes sense? Or are they too busy doing all the crap that makes little to no sense?

Getting three different legislatures to agree on something generally isn't the easiest thing in the world. Hell, we can't even get Congress to pass a frickin' budget. I'm betting that they know that one or both of the state's legislature would object, so they aren't bothering.

If I'm not mistaken, it comes down to which state gets the water.  Look how the state lines run south west of Charlotte.

So, basically, the political machine doesn't do what makes sense?

Yeah, that's kinda my point...

Now please understand that I am but a Damn Yankee but I have been here for sixteen years and I intend to stay.  I have been told by some Old North State natives that Cackalacky ONLY refers to the Palmetto state and not the Tar Heel state so there can be no confusion about the name. The survey, however, is somewhat subjective on the actual ground.  For instance, my lot here in Raleigh is either 0.99 or 1.01 acres, depending.  On what exactly, I don't know.

I'm not sure exactly why, but surveying below the New England states seems to be rather more hit or miss.  Somebody once told me it had to do with the fact that much of the land was not within incorporated territory (town or city limits) or that it was because in NE the clounty government was weaker than the town/city government, or some such.

Anyhow, I have noted in my life that once you get below Connecticut/Rhode Island/New York land for sale seems to be described as x acres +/-, whereas northern lands seem to be sold with an absolute size.

'Scuse me?  Did someone sleep through American History?

My recollection of those halcion days of staring at Jennine Wilson's pigtails is that both of the Carolinas were Confederate States.
