80% 1911 frame, still legal? Still available?
« on: July 11, 2012, 11:03:32 PM »
Nope, not gonna build one.

Have a buddy who lives in Brooklyn, New York, makes custom knives and scales and wants to make grip panels.

No way he's going to the trouble to get any kind of firearm license, but I was thinking an unfinished frame is not a firearm per ATF and even in NYC if there's no rails cut and he doesn't own a barrel or slide I can't find a statute that would apply.

So, basically a non-serialized frame with proper grip holes/bushings and maybe the mag release and plunger tub in place.  Whatever holes that impinge on the grips that would keep it a non-firearm would be handy for fitting.  Heck it doesn't need any top end above the plunger tube for that matter, no rail material at all.

I can't find any mentions online newer than 2009 or so, so I'm wondering if the ATF changed their mind about them?

Could make REALLY sure by machining off the anything ahead of the finger guard and maybe grinding down the sidewalls.

And then shoving it up Nanny Bloomberg's fourth point of contact.

I haven't seen any for sale in some time.  I imagine they are out there - google for it.

Agree with revdisk; once he gets that frame, chopping the front part off in the bandsaw would be well advised.

Some airsoft guns are *really* close in dimension (a friend's Tokyo Marui M1A would actually allow a real M14 magazine to click in place). Just a thought...

Blindhogg sells some grip making jigs.

http://www.blindhogg.com/forsale.html

80% Frames:

http://www.ktordnance.com/kto/products.php

I saw the jig, but in Hogg's process he goes back and forth to teh actual gun to confirm how it feels and fits.

KT's product is too "high end" to be cutting up further (which I totally agree with as a safety measure).

Your buddy could just move to Manhattan (Montana)

Somewhere around here I think I have an AR grip that is made to take 1911 grip panels. Would something like that work?

Maybe some of the "blue" guns have removable grips.
