Private Ammunition Purchases Per Year?
« on: August 18, 2012, 10:06:55 AM »
In response to...

That would make an interesting poll. I'd be curious to see how much we actually do purchase per year. I can lay claim to about 6000 rounds per year (100/week in my M&P for practice, about 2 mags per week in my .380, the rest in whatever else I happen to be shooting) is what it averages out to. Of course I now also have a shotgun and plan on making another long gun purchase by the end of the year. This year would be a little skewed because I had four months where I only fired a weapon on about three occasions, but on average I'll say 6K/year. Next year it'll likely be higher.

A lot. And i don't really stockpile. Ammo doesn't stay in my house more then a year unless it's kinda exotic. Thats one of the reasons I get a little nervous when the media starts talking about "Arsenals with MORE THEN 1000 RDS OF AMMO!!!!!!"

I don't buy much more than .22 rf on a regular basis but will by a box or two of "social" ammo maybe a couple times a year.
I hand load probably a couple thousand rounds a year though.

Not counting .22 (for which I have ~10K stashed, and don't shoot that much anyway), I tend to pick up a box of 9mm or 7.62x39 every few weeks, on general principles.

I'm in the same boat as RKL.  The only time I buy centerfire ammo is when I've purchased gun in a caliber I don't load for yet (most recent was 32-20).  As for rimfire, I buy in batches, but it probably works out to a few thousand per year.

I buy 5.56 and 9mm, because I can usually find it in bulk cheap enough to not make it worth loading. I load a couple thousand rounds of  .45 a year easy though. I also load my precision rifle ammo. .30-06 mostly but that's not much more then a couple hundred per year.

I have a CETME that i really am enjoying, but. 308 is pretty pricey.

To make it worse, theres a nice skeet range near my new house and I'm thinking of getting back into shotgunning for fun after about a 20 year break. I'll probably have to set up for shotgun reloading if that happens.

Ammo, and componants for ammo are the majority of my fun budget, even if new guns are more fun.

Yeah, this poll will under represent the actual ammo consumption of the board because it doesn't include reloading.

I voted 500 to 1000, but that doesn't count all the reloading components I buy, or the lead ingots I am stockpiling.

Even with the ammo, that's an average.  I tend to buy .22LR 5000 at a time, but that lasts me a few years.

In response to the comments about handloading the poll has been changed appropriately. Sorry to everyone who'd already voted, just go ahead and do so again please.

Mine will likely go up when I finish the AR.
Will stockpile a few hundred rounds as my baseline zero first too.

So far this year I've purchased:

500 .308
500+ 9mm
2000+ 5.56 (and I used most of it)
100-500 of other (.22, .380, 12 gauge)

I have not bought any reloading supplies, but I have loaded about 1,000 of 9mm.  I have plenty of supplies, just haven't taken the time to do it.

So, with the current poll results for 29 people, and using the following guestimations....

3 made or bought 6000+ rounds (guestimated average 8000) 24,000
5 made or bought 4000-6000 rounds (g.a. 5000) 25,000
5 made or bought 2000-4000 rounds (g.a. 3000) 15,000
6 made or bought 1000-2000 rounds (g.a. 1500) 9,000
10 made or bought up to 1000 rounds (g.a. 500) 5,000

Comes out to around 78,000 rounds, privately made or bought, by just under 30 folks. Kinda makes some of those agency purchases (that have thousands of people) seem not quite so large. :P

More so, it being the end of the fiscal year next month, I'm guessing they're buying more than normal to both use up their ammo budgets from this year plus prep for the Continuing Resolution, which will likely run OCT-FEB or so. Plus a bunch of them have to do annual FLETC refreshers in SEP and OCT, so extra ammo for that.

I load close to 1000 per year (30-06, 308, 6.5x55, .223) and buy another ~1500/Year- 9MM/45/223.

I really thought it would be higher than that, actually. We're hardly a threat at all.  :'(

At some point, when I got to where I had a couple cases of each of the major rifle ammo types I have, I stopped buy so much.  I like to shoot, but I don't really burn through much ammo.  I tend to shoot groups at paper targets and you can burn a couple hours doing that and only shoot less than 100 rounds.  I burn through more pistol ammo, but I tend to buy boxes here and there of that and shoot more reloads.

I need to dust off my reloading press - too many projects on the house for me to be out in the garage working on that.  Now that the projects are slowing down a bit.....  I'll have time to sit in the garage and contemplate as disparate metals and organic compounds become something greater than the sum of their parts....  :)

Speaking of, anyone use a Lee Pro-1000 for .223/5.56?  a little bit of googling has come up with a pretty mixed bag of positive and negative opinions....  I've got a single stage classic cast as well, but if I'm gonna be shooting that new AR pretty regularly, I'm gonna need something with better output.  And I really don't wanna shell out a whole lot more money at this point...

I'd be interested in those opinions as well.

I've gotten pretty good with my turret press, but As I get my Man Cave/ Gun Room set up I think a progressive press would be a pretty nice addition.
