Thanks for the Arlo Guthrie "City of New Orleans". I had completely forgotten that one.

And the Lightfoot trilogy made me think of another by Gordo. "The Watchman's Gone"
"A son of the sea, am I" Gordon Lightfoot

When I saw the hread title "City of New Orleans" was the first thing that popped into my mind. Many of the others I've never even heard of. I've led a sheltered life...........

I usually think of the Seldom Scene's rendition of "City of New Orleans." Hard to imagine anyone does it better. Sadly, I don't have it on hand, and it doesn't seem to be on Youtube.

Is that the Wicked Witch of the West singing with the conductor at around the 2 minute mark?
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

It seems "City of New Orleans" was actually written by Steve Goodman, not Guthrie.

There's a line in Arlo's song that he "borrowed" from an older piece, "passengers will please refrain."

Yup, Passengers Will Please Refrain is a song its own self.

My grandmother used to sing this to us:

Quote
Passengers will please refrain
From flushing toilets while the train
Is standing in the station. I love you.
We encourage constipation
While the train is in the station.
Moonlight always makes me think of you.

If you simply have to go
When other people are too slow,
There is only one thing you can do.
You'll just have to take a chance,
Be brave, and do it in your pants,
But I'll forgive you, darling. I love you.

 Every evening after dark
 We goose the statues in the park;
If Sherman's horse can stand it, so can you.
 Washington was very firm
 And Lincoln didn't even squirm.
Darling, that's why I'm in love with you,

 Mabel, Mabel, strong and able,
Get your big ass off the table.
Don't you know the quarter is for beer?
You can always earn your pay,
But make your tips another way,
And I'll forgive you, darling. I love you.

And, while this will give you the tune, he sings slightly different lyrics:
"Look at it this way. If America frightens you, feel free to live somewhere else. There are plenty of other countries that don't suffer from excessive liberty. America is where the Liberty is. Liberty is not certified safe."

It seems "City of New Orleans" was actually written by Steve Goodman, not Guthrie.

Yes, it is correct.  City of New Orleans (S. Goodman) has been covered by Willie Nelson, Arlo Guthrie, John Cash, Judy Collins, and many others.
Steve Goodman also wrote the perfect country and western song, also with a train in it, and equal parts of truck, prison, rain, momma, and getting drunk.

Oh, and another thing....

Railroad Lady (Jerry Jeff Walker) as performed by J. Buffet on "White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean",
recorded by JJW, Merle Haggard and others, although it's more about the lady than the train.

She's riding just trying to get home again.

You know how when you were a kid and you heard a really cool song and you'd get a chill and the hair on your neck would stand up?
That song still does that to me, and I didn't even need to click the link.
Even a little tear.
