Regulating the Interwebz.

In addition to putting the internet under the control of one organization we have the Money Quote:

How is that supposed to work?  Say you make a AA battery 30% smaller .... it won't fit in the receptacle and the contacts won't contact.

Logic is not allowed here !!!  We have written a law/regulation that says that batteries will be 30% smaller and efficient.  Therefore, it shall be.

Rough guess here, but I'm assuming the regs are just to keep people from using NiCd batteries in cell phones.  NiCd has pretty much been done away with in Europe because of toxicity concerns.  Lithium ion, which is what we all use in our cells in the US, doesn't have that problem, and they're smaller, and something like 98% efficient.

Or just maybe it's a mandate to quit using 1970's battery technology.

If that's the goal, why not just say "NO MORE NiCd FOR YOU!"?

Because then somebody would just point out something silly like Lithium availability or sources.  ;/

You know, if I want a NiCad battery, I should be able to have one. I prefer them in my power tools, for example. Much cheaper than the Lithiums.

Emrich said one proposal, to be funded by $53B in U.S. dollars, is to connect North and South America using a massive telecom pipeline. Another rule would cover cell phone batteries.

Like I said, it's a rough guess.  I don't care about the issue enough to actually figure out what the Fox News article is really talking about.  They say they want batteries 30% more efficient but don't give a reference point.  30% more efficient/smaller than the best stuff coming out of an MIT lab or 30% more efficient/smaller than 1890's batteries?

*shrug*

Odds are we've got a journalist writing about legislation that he doesn't understand covering technology he doesn't understand and the legislation was written by those that also don't really understand the technology.

Or, you know, par for the course.

What do they mean by efficiency?  Round trip energy storage efficiency?  Because even crappy batteries can do 80-90% at reasonable discharge and charge rates....so they want 110-120% efficient batteries?

Yes, they want to be able to X amount of energy into a battery and draw 1.3X energy out.

Or it's what Giga said.
