Reasonably priced van rental?
« on: November 17, 2012, 10:59:38 PM »
I'd like to pick up a disassembled pool table in Greenville, SC and bring it back here to Decatur, AL, going through Atlanta. With the table taken apart, it should fit in a cargo van. Every place I check--Budget, Ryder, Enterprise, etc---wants an arm and a leg whether it's a one-way rental or round trip.

Does anyone know of a more affordable source for van rentals?

Try looking for a guy with "free candy" painted on the side of his van.

I had no idea that Montgomery had moved away.

Now, Montgomery might be inconvenient, but saying it is not there is downright hurtful if you are a Montgomeryan.

Ooops. Sorry, Vaskidmark. I forgot that. Montgomery isn't much further than Greenville, SC, though.

U-Haul and all the others charge $40 to $100+ a day, plus $.29 and up for mileage. I figure a van from any of the known rental places will cost $300 to $400 for two days, and that's not counting gas. I could rent a Chevy Malibu or Toyota Corolla for ten days for that price.

Can you rent a regular passenger van and remove some seats? Those seem to be more popular at Avis/Hertz/etc.

I wonder if you could put a bid out to have it shipped, like the folks on "Shipping Wars" might save you time and $$$ in the long run.

I bought a pool table in Nashville. A pool table repairman said he'd knock it down, deliver it here and set it up for $450. That works.

I still don't get why vans are so expensive.

Test drive one from the dealership and take it for a long test drive.

I know someone that did it with a pickup. He came back 2 hours latter. He made up a bull story to the guys at the dealership (had to go to hospital or something) The salesmen admitted that they did not think he stole it because he left his car there (5 series bmw). He used it to move furniture.

I've had good success renting Enterprises box vans.  In the past it ran $350 for a week unlimited miles. Round trip only.

For the cost of the rental and the gas and the aggravation of driving all that way, couldn't you buy a pool table locally?

Not necessarily. I wanted (and now have) an Olhausen in as-new condition at a fair price. What I've seen locally so far is either worn tables at inflated prices or as-new tables for a few hundred less than what I could buy new. The pool table service people in the area want $250 to disassemble, deliver and reassemble.

So, I got an almost as-new (a couple of small nicks in one corner) $4500 table for $1500, and a pool tech from Nashville to disassemble there, deliver, set up, balance and install new felt here for $450 total. I think that's a good deal.
