Indeed, but Americans are, we are told, an open-minded and optimistic people.  They are.  Perhaps way too much so.  We are too much in love with our myths about our inevitability.  This is just escapism.

I never suggested that she was any good at her job, but just that she didn't go straight from college into her current job.
