Vaguely Rude Place Names Of The World

Gary Gale is a geo technologist, a geographer – a “self professed geek with a life”. Hailing from London, his realm of geekdom centers around maps.

His “Vaguely Rude Place Names of the World” exhibits his geek-level passion for cartography in having collated some of the world’s cities that have rather…amusing names. At least in English – and, ironically, there seems to be quite a concentration of these places in England – Butthole Lane, Cocks, and Wetwang are just a few ones I’ve selected at random.

I think PA wins with 7 for the US, woot!

I was wondering if he got our Wet Beaver Creek here in AZ.  Yup.  He found it.

I hear the weather is nice in Dikshit this time of year.
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

He missed one in GA: Hopeulikit. Pronounced "hope you like it" but since there's no "e" after the "k" it should really be pronounced "hope you lick it."

Spear and Big Horn in Montana?   ;/

Not being a local, he/she/they missed the good ones:

Hard-on ("Hardin")

Harlot-town ("Harlowton" mostly just called "Harlow")

I drive by this a couple of times a year and always get a chuckle. It's right next to Beaverlick and Rabbit Hash.

On a slightly related note, today I learned that there's a street named Boulevard in West Hartford, CT.  No suffix.  This same street is named West Boulevard in Hartford.  So, drive from Hartford to West Hartford on West Boulevard to Boulevard.

Street names like that drove me bonkers when fixing bugs in our address formatting/verification algorithms on the last product I worked on.

I have driven from Intercourse to Climax...
Political tags - such as royalist, communist, democrat, populist, fascist, liberal, conservative, and so forth - are never basic criteria. The human race divides politically into those who want people to be controlled and those who have no such desire.

You can only do that so many times before you want a change of scenery.  But at least the trip seems to get shorter every time!

Spent one REFORGER in the small German town of Rottenberg.
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.
