Cleaning in basement and found a receipt...
« on: March 31, 2013, 08:46:34 PM »
from 1999 for a 250' roll of 12-2 NM "Romex" cable.  $19.90.   :'(  It's about $70 per roll now.  (at least that's down a little from a year or two ago when it peaked around $90)

14 years, 3.5x increase in price...seems like about ~9% inflation, which is about right.  Odd...the CPI doesn't reflect that?

Don't they just change the formula for CPI when the numbers start to look bad?

If you take food, clothing, shelter, energy, and medical out of the mix, the numbers don't look so bad . . .
Trump won in 2016. Democrats haven't been so offended since Republicans came along and freed their slaves.

Its not just that, they not only remove/add things, but also adjust prices to reflect capability.
For instance, a new phone, the same price as an old phone, but with more features, is adjust to be cheaper, which depresses the overall index.

TV's and computers have been dropping in price over the years -- so .gov weights them much more heavily in the CPI than luxuries like food, housing, and energy.
