Car Keys?
« on: July 31, 2006, 12:01:06 PM »
Just got a new (to me, 2003) Civic and found out that a duplicate key is hard to find and $48 from the dealer.  Are there any other sources for what I used to consider an ordinary key?  By the way, it doesn't have a chip in it or anything, it's just that the edge around the teeth is not ground down like the teeth are, so the machines can not duplicate it.

Thanks, Griz

I think I know the kind of key you are talking about. Flat along the edges and the key ridges are ground along the sides?

Check with a locksmith, it is a special key but can be duplicated. You will need to go to a guy that specializes in keys and locks rather than the local auto parts or hardware place that makes keys.

Try getting a duplicate made of a new VW key.  There aren't any teeth, it's all electronic.

It looks more like a big USB plug than a key.  And to start the car, just push the key in a little farther.  No turning needed.  Weird.
