Texas Campus Carry headed to gov Perry for sig
« on: May 15, 2013, 04:52:35 PM »
HB 972 just passed the Texas Senate.  Gov Perry has already stated his firm support of the bill so his sig is pretty much a given.

972 allows licenced concealed carry on campus unless the university/college opts out.  The opt-out must be annually renewed, and the renewal must include some kind of student/faculty/staff input.

One step back up the mountain, ladies and gentlemen.  One step...  =D

Many colleges will.  IMHO if they get state funding, the rules of 30.06 should apply (can't post off limits).

Still, good to see the goal post being moved thataway.  Open carry next, anyone?

Working at a University Hospital, I'm still screwed. But all to the good, anyway.

Open carry would be so very nice!

We'll have to either get the TSRA on-board with the idea (good luck there) or we'll need an organization with as much pull as the TSRA.

The CHL training providers OWN TSRA, and legal, no-training OC takes money out of the trainers pockets.

Guys and gals, start picking fights in this thread and water down the (albeit small) victory it is, and I'll have the whole damn thing locked.  That also goes for the finger-pointing, nit-picking, and grandstanding against (insert group or person here) because you have a beef with their particular approach to the 2A fight.  Take it to another thread.  This one's for celebrating.

Got it, children?

Is there a single school in the state that WON'T opt out?!?

Most universities are extremely anti-gun.

Be interesting to see the do/don't list.

I think the opt out may not be as common as you think. They have to get student input, and students in some of those schools may be in an uproar.

What does the input involve?  Schedule a few hearings and then ignore what they have to say.  While I know there are some good student gun groups, I wouldn't say that there is a great deal of support for guns on campus.  Time will tell.

Allowing a school to opt out makes the bill worthless in my opinion.

Public universities HATE gun rights.

Beats the heck out of not having the option at all.

The universities can still hate gun rights in a more permissive environment without political cover.

I was wrong.  It only passed committee on the 15th.  It was placed on the Senate Intent Calendar last Friday and the House co-sponsor authorized today.

This is what I get for falling prey to someone else's enthusiam and not double-checking their info.  Dangit!  Dangit!  Dangit!  Dangit!  I should have known it was too much, too quickly given when the bill was sent to committee.  *grump*
