Airplane makes belly landing
« on: May 18, 2013, 08:06:39 PM »

Landing gear failure, so pilot lands on the belly.

Question:  Wouldn't they pre-emptively hose the runway with foam rather than wait for the plane to land and then hit it with foam?

Video footage:

That's a lot of sparks.

If they pre-foamed it, it might have slid much further.
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

They only do that for unconscious, suspended jumpers.

They've gotten away from foaming the runways over the last decade or so.

Dunno if it has to do with cost per gallon, difficulty of cleanup for aircraft arriving afterwards, crash trucks slipping all over the place, EPA concerns, whatever.

We had a nose gear problem on the WC-135 once, no down and locked indicator, and when executing the boldface checklist we discussed the foam issue or lack thereof.

We ended up flying by the tower, and the ATC folks verified gear down for us.

Prefoaming doesnt really do a whole lot plus depletes the foam available for firefighting. Also gear up landings tend to be noneventful so foaming the runway is a waste.

I bet they are pretty damn exciting for those folks in the airplane.

Well, at least the Daily Mail didn't over-hype the story with phrases like "terrified passengers escape alive," "dramatic shower of sparks" and "quick-thinking pilot."

This.

BTDT.  Standard foaming hasn't been used since the nineties.

They only do that for unconscious, suspended jumpers.

They should.   There are certain requirements for timed response, that require staging the ARFF trucks along the runway.  Usually a few at each end and a few midfield.

The problem with staging emergency vehicles is that sometimes planes don't stay on the runway after landing.

True.  Haven't had a belly landing in ages.  I'd be unsurprised if vehicles were kept a little further back in case the aircraft slides off the runway.

I've skipped ahead to several spots in the video, but haven't seen any plane landing. Where is it?

I saw it but the vid is from very far away so all you can see is the aircraft lights coming in for a landing.

Foam is expensive.

They could just have the plane fly in low over the fire truck and spray the bottom  =D
