My new neighbors....
« on: June 19, 2013, 12:20:06 PM »
I hate them!

Their house is small, but they keep adding on to it and it is encroaching on my property.

The family seems really big but with an interesting demographic. Seems to be a single mom with what seems like hundreds of kids. I can't identify the father.

They seem to have a pretty good work ethic, not quite worker bees but something close.

I want to kill them!!

They are White Faced Hornets!!

They are evil and must go.

Mike Irwin suggested some "Sevin" but I really don't want to get near these bastards. I got a can of that hornet spray that allows some distance.

Detcord? Flamethrower? Orbital nuke? .223 round?

The nest is against my house so a scorch mark would not really go over well with the Minister of the Interior.......

Ideas???

Very soapy water?  Do so at night.

Or just use wasp spray.

I had a bald faced hornet nest in one of my pines. I waited till it was almost dark (they're less active), put my ladder up next to the nest, then took a large clear plastic bag (you'll want to see how pissed off they really get) and put it over the nest. I duct taped the bag closed around the branch, then cut the branch off the tree. Then, using a pump sprayer, I shot 91% alcohol into the bag (which killed the hornets). No need to completely soak the nest, as the vapors will kill them.

I don't recommend this method for everyone but, in my case it worked out well.

I've found that Spectracide Pro does a credible job on wasps and hornets.

You pay a neighbor kid $10 to throw a rock at the nest. While all of the hornets or wasps are out of the nest and chasing the kid, you knock it down with a broom handle and smash it. When the hornets or wasps return, they find themselves homeless and go somewhere else.

Removing the nest will not work until they are all dead.

They've managed to built it AROUND some ornamental ironwork on the front of Castle Key's house. They are way too close to the drive way, the sliding glass door, and the front door.

They have to go.

The wasp & hornet spray I get at Lowe's is extremely effective. A new can has a range of about 25 feet, so it can be deployed with (relative) impunity.

I've seen it done with a big shop vac. Put the hose over the opening and tap the nest, when the workers all come out to defend the nest, they end up in the shop vac. After a few minutes of collection, spray insecticide in the hose, plug it, and shut it off. Then you can bust the nest open and use brake cleaner on the drones that are still inside, they don't have stingers. Of course, this was done while wearing a beekeepers suit.
A plan is just a list of things that doesn't happen.
Is defenestration possible through the overton window?

I got mud dobbers, wasps, hornets, and bumble bees. Its a yearly battle keeping all of them away from the house, swing set, and shed. I get the "Hot Shot" stuff. It kills the buggers fairly quick, good range, seems to kill the nests. I soak the nest or offending scout, and then run away to the house. Next day the bodies of my enemies lay dead on the ground.

How about a picture of this nest, it is easier to come up with far fetched solutions if there is a visual!

Because dealing with this one:

^ This.  Except I'd make sure the hotel was at least a full county away, your cell phone battery was dead, and you paid the pest control person in cash.

Depending on the hotel, the pro may or may not take credit cards.  I don't think any of them take checks any more.

The thing is, those do not look like structures that appeared overnight.  You might want to consider increasing the frequency of recon patrols so that you can call in strikes before they not only have established a beachhead but apparently opened up a casino and condo complex.

Just wondering out loud, but how many of the soapy water/rubbing alcohol/brake cleaner folks are sticking with their recommendations?  I'm not including the shop vac because I don't think they make one to fit that size unless you are able to "borrow" the truck they use for cleaning up parking lots.

stay safe.

I've had good results with RAID Wasp spray. Stuff's a neurotoxin, they go down quick.

Alternatively, if you want something that doesn't stink and is toxic, orange oil-based sprays will also kill them, though I've never tried it on a large nest. There's a chemical in the peel (the name of which I can't recall) that basically causes their exoskeleton to lose its ability to hold in water, which results in dehydration and death fairly quickly (almost as fast as the RAID stuff). It may also interfere with their ability to breath. Not sure how well it'd work on a large nest, though.

I used to keep a bottle of this stuff in my bathroom, and it served double duty on the occasional mud dobber or paper wasp nest.
