Supplies for a friend
« on: July 05, 2013, 07:09:04 AM »
My friend's son is a fantastic young man, a kid who really is getting his life together!! Eighteen years old, faithful, patriotic, driven, focused, you name it, a kid going places.

I really should not use the word kid, as he is truly growing into a strong MAN!!

This kid's driving ambition for many years was to enter the Army and become a Ranger.

He is entering his third week of Ranger school and doing well. When I talked to him last night, I asked him if he needed me to send anything that would make his life easier.

The only thing he requested was a medium size folding knife, about three inch blade, of good enough quality to be useful, but not so nice that if he lost it or broke it, he would be annoyed.

With that in mind, any recommendations?

Also, if I am shipping stuff to him, is there other items that he would like/need?

Stuff like food products, pens, lighters, duct tape, baling twine, etc?

The collective wisdom of this group should give me some ideas!

What stuff would you like and believe would be allowed for his training?

He also said that he is loving the drive and motivation of the instructors and the remaining students. His class has had a huge number of drop outs because the drops suffer from small hearts. So far his worst body wear and tear is a small cut on his foot.

Such a huge contrast between this young man and one of Louis' friends from back home. The back home friend is sadly a disaster causing enormous angst for his entire family.

A twelve-pack of those knives  ???

There are several good knives that would fit the bill as to what he's looking for:
Cold Steel Recon:  http://www.coldsteel.com/Product/RECON.20_1.20_SERIES/RECON_1_SERIES.aspx
Spyderco Delica:  http://www2.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_store.html?ttl=Spyderco%20Delica%20Models&cat=sp&k=delica&series=313&
Columbia River M16:  http://www2.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_store.html?ttl=Columbia%20River%20M16%20Models&bwSKUdatarq=crm16&series=702&
Ontario RAT:  http://www2.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_store.html?usrSearch=Rat+Model+1&brand=148&&series=1298

no matter which knife you choose, you may want to include something like this:
http://www2.knifecenter.com/item/SMIPP1/Smiths-inchPocket-Pal-inch-Knife-Sharpener
Something that will keep his blade sharp in the field.  Not the best way to sharpen your knives, but good enough to keep you cutting in the field.

Any of these.  Don't send too much. Small amounts good. Think small, compact, and acceptable in a military training environment. In other words, only functional stuff. Nothing that would bring him happiness or whatnot. Instructors can smell a happy recruit at twenty paces, and are trained like attack dogs to respond with aggressive instinct.

Aint nothing like the pleasant...er... icy-hot sensation of Gold Bond Green after a luxurious baby wipe wipedown.     Makes the no shower for weeks suck less.

Part of the problem of Ranger School is the sleep deprivation.  Moist towelette twixt the nethers quickly followed by a dusting of Green will wake you up RFN.

I have one, and so far it's been good build quality for the price point.

Seriously though, for a "use it for Ranger school, beat it up, good enough to be used not so good you don't wanna abuse it" knife it's ideal.
