Legacy 5.0 seems to be doing all I want of it and has capabilities I have not yet explored.  Certainly, it is more than I need for now.

Legacy does require registration and unlocking to use more than 14 launches. This is free.

FWIW, my download of Legacy has passed muster with Norton AntiVirus, SpyBot-Search & Destroy, Webroot Spy Sweeper, and Ad-Aware.

Cool..I know a few people are looking for one.

If anyone else wants me to do some research, just let me know. I have some time right now and I like doing it. I don't think anyone (except maybe Grampster) has been disappointed with what I've found.

Fancy doing an entirely English one? Sort of curious about the family stories of selling wives at market and being banished to a small village for banditry or somesuch naughtiness.

I can try, although I won't make any promises.

My grandma was born in England and I've been able to track her family pretty well. Not sure if I can find the old family stories you might be looking for, but send me the info you have and we'll see what we can come up with.

Barbara,

I have bumped into a couple of contradictions I would appreciate your take on:  what appear to be two different birth dates for my grandfather, same year, 1878, but different dates; and my great grandfather appears as the son of both a prior marriage in which ggGrannie appears to have married another of my family and as the son of the ggGrandpa we have "known".  Both men have the same last name (mine) and one record lists the "unknown" as marriage 1. Is there something worth pursuing here, or can this be written off to sketchy records?

No, its very possible and one those are the things it's fun to try to figure out.

The birthdate is probably a typo. One of the census gives a month and year of birth.. I think 1900, maybe 1910.

I'm assuming she may have married brothers? It's not uncommon, at all..often, a man marries one of his wife's sisters after she passes away.

Send me the info and I'll be glad to look it up.

Thanks, an e-mail has been sent.

Guess I need to go hunting among the census records.

Think I'll get my sea legs on Dad's family:  Mom's runs back through Czechoslovakia and, supposedly, every Slavic and Nordic country.  A lusty, well traveled bunch little given to being ethnocentric!  Could be fun...

Still getting over the Benedict Arnold link, myself. shocked

Regardless, there are a couple more branches in the tree I'd like to explore, time willing.  My parents are heading to Scotland in the next month, Mom wants to know which tartan is her pattern so when she goes shopping...

Gewehr..you're the first person I've ever come across with a famous relative and you'd probably like to give him to someone else..sorry about that! Smiley

Iain..sent you some stuff. The family is well-researched back into the 1500s, from what I can tell.

Gewher is related to Benedict Arnold? Ever hear of the massacre at Ft Griswold in Groton CT? General Arnold commanded the British troops responsible for said massacre. Quite an intriuging story...

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gmasue/griswold.htm

The stories I read while searching the net do not coincide exactly with stories I have heard before. They now claim that the wounded were put in a wagon that "accidentally" got away and crashed into a tree when in the past it was related that the British did this for some cruel sport / torture.

The other story is that the massacre occured because the flag at the fort had gotten shot away. The British took it as a sign of surrender and stormed the fort, exposing themselves, meanwhile the Patriots kept on fighting. The British thought this to be some dishonorable trick and went beserk. It is implied that the British officer skewered Ledyard with his own sword as a "revenge" for the dishonorable trick played out under his command.

Sorry I stole your time and thread here for a second. Back to geneology...

Oh heck, here's one more link...

Thanks a bunch, Barbara!

Gave me a lot to think about, though.

I've always thought (don't know why) that my ancestors didn't come to the US until after the Civil War.  Now I realize that they came much earlier in the 19th century.

The great-great-grandfather who apparantly owned a brewery (and, OMG...slaves!!!) in Nashville is an eye-opener!

I had always thought the majority of my lineage were simple farming/worker bee folks...never imagined that there was any slave ownership or folks who lived in the CSA in my ancestry.

I've sent you an email, but thanks again Barbara.

Gewehr - have to ask, just what is wrong with being related to Benedict Arnold? From my point of view he fought for the right side in the end.

Looking it up helped me to understand a Family Guy joke anyway.

After being reported by Lois to the FCC for running an illegal cable channel, Peter asks her if breakfast will be Eggs Benedict Arnold.
