A couple of years ago when I drove to Texas and back, I listened to "Dracula", downloaded from archive.org  I don't remember how many hours it ran, but I think it was over 15.  I'm looking for a title for doing that again; something entertaining that I should have read in high school or college.  And did I mention, free?

What about Moby Dick?  (or is that horribly boring?)  Any other suggestions?  Part of this is to try jump-starting my attention span, which has gotten incredibly short and flabby in the past 10 or so years of Internet surfing instead of reading.

Thanks.  The Dracula recording I listened to was by Librivox.

Didn't Dumás also write The Three Musketeers?  (we knew a hippy-ish couple a few years ago who named their son D'Artagnan.  He had the cutest little mullet haircut)

Moby Dick is awesome, purely because the descriptions of whaling are so fascinating.

Gulliver's Travels is good too.
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

A list of some of his books, the man in the iron mask was another good one.

http://librivox.org/  my favorite.

http://librivox.org/the-count-of-monte-cristo-version-3-by-alexandre-dumas/

Don't do version 1.

Better yet:  http://librivox.org/captain-blood-by-rafael-sabatini/

Captain Blood

I'll second the suggestion of The Count of Monte Cristo. One of the greatest books ever written.

(Edit: It will have the added benefit of filling many hours to get through it.)

I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

I'd add the suggestion to get the newer Buss translation. It's a far superior translation to the older, more widespread one. The Buss translation reads like the book was originally written in English as opposed to the more awkward text from the older translation. Unfortunately the Project Gutenberg text is the older translation, so any audiobooks will likely use that one.

. . .

Yeah, a brief search shows nobody has yet done an audiobook with the updated translation that I can see. Still makes for good reading listening with the old one, though.

As sarcasm doesn't translate into text well, I'll assume you are serious and point out that he's meaning which Jules Verne book, not which Jules Verne.

Only a real *ahole* would be snarky and sarcastic in a thread where he was asking for advice.  I was being snarky and sarcastic. :D

Dood, the "Serious" knob doesn't have to be on 11 all the time...

And another vote for Count of Monte Cristo because he makes a great sammich.

  • I spent a week in that town one night....
Atlas Shrugged.
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

Reading comprehension failure.

I would enjoy a reading of Beowulf in the original Old English. Understanding it would be a different problem...

Hey, when it gets into one of the several chapter-long speeches, I might not even need to be asleep to drive off the cliff.
