Escape from Camp 14
« on: November 14, 2013, 06:40:47 PM »
The story of Shin Dong-hyuk.  The only person known to escape from a Total Control Camp in North Korea.  In fact the only person known to have been born in such a camp and escape.  His father was sent there because two of his fathers 10 brothers went to South Korea during the Korean War, he never did learn why his mother was there.

It's a amazing and heart-breaking story of his life and his near miraculous escape from both the camp and North Korea.

I won't give any spoilers here (yes, he escapes and makes it to freedom), but the brain washing, amorality, and horrendous treatment are too surreal to believe, but I have no doubt they are true given the nature of North Korean regime, socialism in general and it is corroborated by others that served as guards in the camps, yet also defected.

If you want to see the end game of where liberals/progressives have us heading to, this it it.
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

When you have to take from one group, to give to another group, force is always required .
First , force is need to take the proceeds of work.
Later, force is needed to compel people to work.
In the end, force is needed to keep a lid on rebellion.
It always ends up as slavery.

Read an article on him a year or two ago.  It should be required reading for all 9th graders and up.

Read it. Bit short, but good.

Most interesting thing is South Korea vaguely wants unification, but really does not want to pay the pricetag.  Estimates vary, but roughly 10% of their GDP for many decades is the lowest cost. And they would need tens of thousands of shrinks. It would still take generations before the NK population was stabilized in terms of becoming civilized.

It's there, it is in my recently watched queue on my BluRay player.

Does this link work?

http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/70264533?strkid=266240612_0_0&trkid=222336&movieid=70264533

I searched for it on their website and it came right up.

That link did indeed bring up the movie.

Maybe it doesn't come up for me when I search using "Camp 14: Total Control Zone" because I'm not signed up for streaming videos, only for DVD's?

Thanks Red!

This.  The ROK's watched Germany's reunification very, very closely.  I addition to the price tag, the main difference being that the East Germans had some exposure to western culture via TV and Radio.   The Norks have done a pretty good job of keeping any "Western/Southern" influences out.  Plus Korea was a vassal state of Japan prior to WWII, so the people have no real experience with being anything other than indentured servants.   Other than a select few who travel abroad to scam and procure luxury goods for the Kim family and those at that level, the rest of the population only knows that the US and the ROK are the embodiment of everything evil and wrong in the world.   While the DDR, et al. tried to pedal that line, the people knew what life was like before WWII and what the west was like from watching western TV and listening to RFE/VOA/BBC, etc.

The monetary cost will be staggering as the Nork economy has pretty much collapsed, and "de-programming" 25 million slaves (and that's pretty much their status) will take several generations, and even then some won't believe their lying eyes.  From the book, they point out how difficult it is for escaped Norks to adapt as they are 1) don't trust anyone, and 2) expect to be told what to do, all the time.

Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.
