Dogs Poop Magnetically

Okay, I believe there is some truth to this. Thinking about it after I read the article, Romy, after doing her turn in circles thing, generally aligns herself N-S or S-N. Not exactly on the line, but I think around plus or minus 20 deg.

Does she put in declination when setting her poop heading?

My money says it has to do with wind direction and not getting a breeze up the old wazoo whilst doing the deed. Guess I'll have to bring a compass out with me from now on.

Hey, I didn't think about that. We're plus 13 here. That could significantly reduce the perceived error. I'm taking a compass on walks and checking.

My dog is female. Like most females of any species she doesn't know North from her own butt. She tends to pick the most heavily traveled areas of the yard to plant her land mines. Her favorite location seems to be around the grand kid's swingset.

In our house poop / no poop is part of the daily info stream. This must be confirmed at every pit stop. FYI, he did seem to be facing somewhat NE this morning. lol

My dog is kind of funny.  She doesn't do the circle thing.  She'll start walking funny for a few steps, in kind of a semi-squat, before dropping to a full squat to do her business.  Compass directions are irrelevant to pooping for her.

And like 280, I don't watch in the yard, but as the house dog walker, I get to see more than my share of droppings...

Mine does 3 pees, then a poop.  For the poop, she is always facing away from me.  You can tell a pee from a poop at distance in two ways:  1.  the squat is different  2.  when she poops, her tail kinks from the strain.

My dog circles a couple times and poops. Turns about 25 degrees and does the other half of her crap.

I can't believe I just read this whole thread. . . .

And my dog usually tries to get her head or butt into a bush or tree branches when doing her business . . .

Yeeep.

If mine assumes the "dog taking a shat" position but determines that she's to exposed, she'll clench and woddle a little further under a tree. I do believer her standard involves a certain percentage of my loosing an eye when I try and bag the goods.

I haven't noticed which direction she ends up in, but I have wondered if dogs in the southern hemisphere spin clockwise before poopin'. (mine spins counter-clockwise).

Biggest dawg here tries to back into a signpost, tree, shrub, etc, while still being nose-first into the wind.

Smaller dawg just drops, but still has nose into wind.  Having been downwind, I don't blame them.

My dog has now pooped twice since this thread started. Once facing SE, and once facing west.
