You guys may take this crap back up north   and out west, because we (your southern neighbors) don't want it.

Yeah, but what about when it gets cold  ???    :P

My old 1971, 1973, 1980, and 1965 Chevy pickups started without heaters down around -30 or  -40 or sometimes colder.

The 1976 GMC is a bit cranky because it doesn't have a choke.  The automatic choke would stick, and I never could get the manual choke conversion to work right on that 4bl carb.  It worked great on the 1977 Suburban that had a 2bl (I wish I had that old 2wd clunker back - it was cold and noisy and hard to steer but it ran great and got 18mpg).

I remember the day we moved to town ...   =(

It was -54 that morning and I had to put the muffler back on one of my pickups before going out into "civilization."

Update on the avalanche:  http://billingsgazette.com/news/state-and-regional/montana/woman-buried-by-mount-jumbo-avalanche-dies-danger-at-site/article_3efd361d-4c35-5ee9-b3d4-2b2e502422d3.html

The woman has died of her injuries.  Her husband is still in serious condition.  The 8 year old boy has been released from the hospital.

The additional snow and a little freezing rain have ramped up the danger again and all the volunteers have been pulled out.

Don't rub it in.  This morning was -6, a high of 12 today and a low of -10 tonight.  I happened to read the NWS ice forecast this morning.

Quote
THE 15 TO 30 DAY ICE OUTLOOK INDICATES THE ICE FIELDS WILL GRADUALLY
DIMINISH ACROSS LAKES ERIE AND HURON WITH LARGE OPEN AREAS BY THE
END OF THE MONTH OF MARCH.  LAKE MICHIGAN SHOULD BE RELATIVELY ICE
FREE BY THE END OF THE MONTH ACROSS THE ENTIRE BODY OF WATER. LAKE
SUPERIOR IS EXPECTED TO SEE SIGNIFICANT ICE COVER THROUGH THE END OF
MARCH.

Scuttlebutt says there may still be ice on Lake Superior in early May.   :'(

The forecasters  who called on Saturday for sunny and 70 today were off by about 35 degrees, and didn't factor in the rain. Or maybe they were thinking Argentina when they wrote the Alabama forecast.

Uphill, both ways.   ;)

In other news, the interstate is closed from west of Missoula to the Idaho line because of avalanches, and the neighborhood in Missoula where the house was destroyed (2 injured, 1 dead) has been evacuated.

Well, it's still winter.  We went from ~80* to ~19* in less than 36 hours.  A bit of sleet (1/4" - 1/2") turned into a solid cover of ice on the roads.  The normal 1/2 hour drive to work took over 1 1/2 hours.

Yet another time when I've been glad to have experience racing on dirt tracks.

What kind of a race is that?

Well there's more white *expletive deleted*it falling from the sky today.  Hopefully we'll get enough for Robert to go earn some money doing driveways.
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,

This was more of a "show off your finesse" instead of "how fast can you go".  Or, in other words, "how fast can you go & still keep it off the wall".

We had a bunch of stuff falling through the sky this morning.

It was the hoar frost descending from the trees after a thick layer accumulated on them overnight.

Kinda weird, and neat, to watch the sunlight catch the shards as they fell.

Last Monday we had a morning low of 7. Next Monday forecast for a high of 77.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

So, it's March 7. In the South.

It's forecast to be in the mid-60's tomorrow and was in the 60's last weekend.

Today? Oh, yes, a beautiful blanket of snow greeted me as I woke up. (Mind you, I'm not complaining, I enjoy winter. I just find the sudden swings in weather amusing.)
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought
