By an odd coincidence, I was at the Dallas Jewish Community Center on Monday verifying some measurements. It did strike me as a bit of a soft target. Though they have onsite armed security, it's one off-duty cop and the building is the size of a small-to-medium shopping mall, plus the grounds. An active shooter would have a good 30-40 seconds even if the cop immediately recognized the sound and could narrow down the location right away, and took immediate, effective action upon arrival. As anybody who's done timed range drills knows, 30 seconds is forever. As anyone who's read the reports of Columbine, etc. knows, immediate, effective action isn't exactly a strong point for police response to active shooters.
