Where would you advertise a motorcycle?
« on: May 30, 2014, 09:29:18 AM »
I've decided that it's time to sell my Harley. I haven't ridden it more than one or two times in the last 18 months, and not much in the year before that. I guess that phase of my life is over.

Anyway, I probably waited too long to make the decision, so I need to advertise in places that get good attention.

Any suggestions?

If you really want to sell it, price it to sell.

I hear $22,000 is a good price if it has been sitting for a long time.

That's the Honda Price, better add another $10K for a Harley.

If you figure it out, let me know.

Still haven't had much interest at all on the Honda I'm trying to sell.  =|

ADVRider! There's a Flea Market section.

My KLR 650 sold in three days, leaving for Chicago yesterday morning in a semi trailer. The buyer used U-Ship and PayPal. It went well.

Or C-List; that works, too. I'm there every day looking at boats.

Also make sure to mention that you have another $15,000 'invested' in chrome and performance parts on the bike.

Wise advice.

Yep. Good pictures and start of the riding season (if you're in a place with a prolonged off season anyway) can help, but at the end of the day it's all about what you're asking.

If you have a Harley dealer nearby might consider to see if they will allow you to put on their floor on consignment.

Or, more precisely, pricing it realistically based on what buyers are willing to pay rather than what you "think it's worth".

It's an '89 Springer. I've had it since it was six months old with 2400 miles on it. It now has 115K on it, although I baby it, so it looks more like most bikes at 20-30K. No mechanical/electrical problems, rust, dents or significant scratches.

I've been looking at '89 Softails on a number of sites (cycletrader.com, etc), and the prices vary pretty widely, from $5,000 something on up to over $10,000. The $10,000 ones are more heavily customized. Most of the bikes have 20,000 or 40,000 on them, which I question. Who puts on just 1200 miles a year?

I figure I'll ask $5500 and see what happens. I was going to go for over $6,000, but it's June already, and people have been riding here in AL for a couple of months. Come July they'll stop for a bit when it's too hot.

I've had my '02 Road King on CL for several month and I've only had 1 call. Guess I  got it priced to high.

Should move, that is below book value.

Harley owners? You don't roll the odometer when sitting on a trailer or revving it up at 2am in your driveway...

No, but seriously many folks only do short rides on weekends during a few months in the summer.

Damn RKL that is a smokin deal.  Wish I had the extra cash laying around.  I need to upgrade my bike just can't afford to right now.

$8000 for a nice RK is a pretty good deal.

Will your handle be just "Larry" when it sells?

When I decided to sell my '09 Road King, I consigned it at the local dealer, and paid them $1200 to move it. That was their max commission; 20% or $1200.

Yeah it seemed like a lot but they get good traffic, and the people coming in are often ready to buy.

A good point, and folks are willing to pay more to a dealership than an individual.

I had to get a new battery, even though the previous one was just two years old. Too much sitting.

Took the bike for a ride, and it sure felt good after all this time. Makes me question selling it. But, I have to remind myself that I haven't ridden more than a few days in the last two years.  I doubt that's going to change.
