Pet cell phone/tracking device.

Over the last 2 days, the Incubii have been working on a project in the back yard. The Incubii are technically challenged when it comes to relatively simple containment technologies, such as gates and the need to keep them closed.

I've had 2 phone calls in 2 days from kindly neighbors who have 'found' my goofy female Labrador wandering a few blocks from the house. This is the same one who took a week-long road trip a few years ago and ended up nearly across town. All in all, she's 'escaped' through an open gate four times in 2 days, that I know of.

Now, there's this:  http://www.petsmobility.com/

Interestingly enough, the news this evening ran a story on this device. I think I'll look into it. It's a cell phone that you attach to your pet's collar; anyone finding the dog (which ideally would have said collar/device attached) could press a button and autodial your home/cell.

The really cool thing is the backend applications; GPS tracking in real-time and a GPS tripwire which can alert you via PDA if the cell leaves a predetermined perimeter.

I think I'm going to have to look into this. Might get two, one for the dog, the second for the younger Incubus who can't find his way from school to home. Too bad it's not implantable...yet.

Unlike the one you posted, it's not water proof (only resistant) and it doesn't feature the call-home features, but you might want to check out http://www.globalpetfinder.com/ also.  It's got some nice features like being able to set up a boundary, and if the pet goes outside of the boundary, you get an automatic text message saying where the dog went.

Looks pretty damn pricey though, especially with the monthly plan.

Neat idea. My folks have a female lab that sounds like it could be a sister to yours. She will blissfully go on an adventure without any apparent concern that you wont end up finding her.
