There were a lot of 40-50mpg cars on the market in the 90's, that are gone today.  Nothing on par with a Geo Metro, for instance.  It's not fair to compare ICE/electric hybrids to a pure ICE vehicle like the Metro.

But they were a small faction of cars sold back then. Overall avg mpg has gone up since.

In my case
2007 Focus SES (what I drive now) 32mpg
For comparison 2016 42mpg

$3.95 to $3.99 here in rural Ky.  The cities and interstate areas are .40 or more higher.

$4.19-4.25 at most stations in Louisville this morning. Actually seem to be creeping down a bit at some. Nearly 100% of them were $4.25 yesterday.

Expect Biden and gang to do something to reverse that trend

This isn't good. We can't let Uncle Joe get credit for dropping gas and oil prices.

Filled up yesterday for $3.79. Sucks, but beats the heck out of $4.19 from same time last week.

Yours went down? Nice.

Ours is exactly where it was a week ago, which is good, I guess, because it's not continued to jump.

CNN headline
"Oil prices dropped 30% in a week. What gives?"
Over a picture of Biden

The article doesn't even mention Biden but it's clear what mental image they're trying to put in your head.
Most people won't go pass the headline and they know it.

Canada stepping up to the plate.

Quote
Canada is discussing a boost in its oil exports to make up for banned Russian volumes, for both the United States and Europe, the country’s natural resources minister has said.

Jonathan Wilkinson spoke to his counterparts from the G7 group last week, saying “In the context of the discussions, not just with the Americans, but the Europeans as well, we have essentially asked each other, those of us that are oil and gas producers, to look at whatever we can do,” in an interview with the Canadian Press.

Wilkinson appears to be optimistic that the way to increase oil exports to countries that need more oil could be finalized by March 23, when European and North American energy ministers meet in Paris at an event organized by the International Energy Agency.

$3.71 this morning, down a whopping 4 cents.

Crude is continuing to drop, but it's really slowed down today. Moving a lot more tentatively and waiting for results of the Ukraine-Russia talks.

If you have a drill, funnel and a few gas jugs it is cheap.

I simply won't buy a car that requires premium gasoline.

My ex wife had a 1986 Crapstang, one of the still very neutered Ford Mustangs. She was absolutely convinced that it was some sort of super high performance speciality sports car and absolutely REQUIRED premium gasoline or the engine would explode.

I showed her the book -- premium not required.

I showed her various industry articles on how premium is a waste of money if your car doesn't require it.

Nope. Absolutely HAD to have premium, or death, destruction, and debasement.

I NEVER put premium in it. And she never knew the freaking difference.
