Provide reasons to not cancel my Netflix subscription
« on: October 09, 2006, 09:51:09 AM »
I have the 3 at a time plan but I haven't been getting my money's worth lately, because I can't think of any movies I want to watch. I know there are a lot of older or slightly older movies that I missed watching, but I'm only interested if they are really high caliber.
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

I have the cheapers 'single movie' option, and it's great.

I just added "The 300 Spartans" to the queue.

I like it because every time I enter a movie store I forget the list of movies that I've been meaning to see, or I do remember but they don't have it.

I suggest checking out every movie made by the Coen brothers, especially "Miller's Crossing".

Yeah, just do the single movie option...2 movies a month at Blockbuster will cost you more that the $9.95 for Netflix.

I'm spending $9.99 monthly for blockbuster.com's single-movie-at-a-time option, which in addition to the movies-by-mail thing includes two coupons per month to rent ANY movie at the local Blockbuster store.

So far I've worked through Have Gun, Will Travel and much of Combat! (Boy, do guest actors like Charles Bronson and Robert Duvall look YOUNG!)

I voluntarily suspended my Netflix account for 3 months for the very reason you mentioned; namely, I've seen or already own everything I want to see.

Coen Bros. is a good recommendation; so is 300 Spartans.
I sort of weigh in both hands whether to continue the expanded cable on a monthly basis, or find something I'm missing with the movie thing...

Maybe if we do a "APS Members' Top 10 Movies" thread, and that will spark some new ideas.

Mine are somewhat odd, admittedly.

Top 290 highest grossing movies of all time. Of these, I've seen 19 of them all the way through..and probably parts of a dozen others.

Indendence Day
Chronicles of Narnia
The Incredibles (I think. Part of it.)
Men in Black (I'm seeing a Will Smith pattern here.)
Home Alone
Pretty Woman
Mrs. Doubtfire
Rainman
Grease
A Bug's Life
How the Grinch Stole Christmas
National Treasure
Beverly Hills Cop
Wedding Crashers (Completely unwillingly.)
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York
Erin Brockovich (just this year)
Robots
The Patriot
The Jungle Book

Actually, I've seen 20, I think because I watched one of the meteor movies..the one with Bruce Willis, but I don't know what it was called.

My Dad decided to work his way through the B horror movies (specifically the vampire movies) starting from the lowest star ranking and going through the entire list.

I use my Netflix to watch TV series.  I'm on season 5 of Smallville right now.  I don't have cable, so I watch these shows when the antenna signal is poor.  I generally have one disk of Smallville and one movie at any given time.

That's what I've been doing with Netflix lately. Currently Magnum PI and Gigantor.

TV series provide the best bang for your buck on Netflix. I have a weird schedual and never catch anything on TV, so its a godsend for me.

Check out the recomendations for Netflix, you can find some interesting movies in there. I usually end up browsing and chaining a whole bunch of movies together that way. I have 400 movies in my Queue, so its gonna be awhile before I run out of choices. Try looking at lists of oddball movies, just to get an idea of some things you might not have seen before, dont be afraid to try something unusual, since you arent paying for each movie its worth taking some chances.

Chalk up another Netflix TV series watcher. There's a lot of British stuff there that you wouldn't normally see. If you're into historical fiction/mystery stuff, I'd recommend the Foyle's War series.
